Foods that fight prostate cancer:
Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain the active ingredient lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant. In fact, the antioxidant lycopene is what gives tomatoes their color. Aside from being a great food coloring, and more importantly, lycopene has been shown in studies to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. How you cook the tomatoes is of some importance. It is said that the longer you cook them, and the more processed they become, the more lycopene they release. So if you like making your own tomato sauce, you're in luck.
Broccoli
No surprise here. What isn't broccoli good for? The jury's still out on that one. Although studies have shown that broccoli reduces the risk of prostate cancer, the irony is that no one is exactly sure what it is in broccoli that's actually preventing cancer. Some suggest that perhaps sulforaphane might boost detoxifying enzymes in the body, or may act as an antioxidant itself. Unlike tomatoes, it doesn't matter how you prepare your broccoli. You can steam it, stir-fry it, sauté it or just eat it uncooked.
Soy
Yet another super-food that just keeps proving itself over and over again. The soybean is a high protein legume that has been known to have preventive properties against many types of cancer, including prostate cancer. As you probably already know, soybeans come in the form of soy-milk, soy-burgers, tofu, and so on. It is believed that the isoflavones in soy are what reduce the risk of cancer. Isoflavones are compounds that are also sometimes referred to as plant estrogens because they behave similarly in plants, as human estrogens due in people.
Flaxseed
Flaxseed is the seed of the flax plant, a plant used for making linen fabric. Along with being very high in omega-3, flaxseed is also choc full of lignans that might be acting as an antioxidant. As far back as the 1950's flaxseed and flaxseed oil have been promoted as cancer fighting foods. However, it is still unclear if there is a direct connection between flaxseed and prostate cancer, but the studies look promising.
