It's easy to eat heart healthy now than it was before. As numerous researches suggest that the key to eating heart healthy is to decrease your intake of bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase your intake of good cholesterol (HDL), we are now more aware of what we should eat for maintaining the health of our hearts.

Research suggests that we should be eating more foods with unsaturated fats and fewer foods with saturated fats to ensure heart healthy diet. What this basically means is that you should eat more fruits and vegetables, goods fats and skip out on that extra burger and fries tomorrow. For a heart healthy diet, you should keep away from fatty and sugary foods.

Instead, you should try eating foods that are of good cholesterol. You should eat foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids for a heart healthy diet. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce the triglyceride levels in the body and protect the heart. Sardines, mackerel, olive oil, flaxseed oil and primrose oil are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids. You can prepare these foods at mealtime for a heart healthy diet against heart disease.

Another powerful arsenal against heart disease that you can increase in your diet is fiber. Fiber helps to protect the heart by cleaning out the valves of the heart and the body. Fiber flushes out fat and junk build up in the arteries, which helps to prevent heart disease and cancers of the body. Some foods that are rich in fiber are:

Fruits

Fruits are excellent sources of fiber. Along with providing you with a heart healthy diet, fruits also come equipped with essential vitamins and minerals that that promote good overall health. Be sure to add a healthy serving of fresh fruits at breakfast in your diet against heat disease.

Vegetables

Everyone always told you to eat your vegetables as a kid so you can grow big and strong. But even when we are adults we still need to eat our vegetables to maintain good health and a healthy heart. Vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, eggplant, kale and cabbage are great sources of fiber that promote heart health. So add more vegetables to your diet today.

Whole Grain Cereals

Whole grain cereals and whole grain products are great for a healthy heart. Cereals and grains are high fiber foods that help to remove junk from our arteries and ward off heart disease and cancers. Moreover, cereals and grains have added vitamins and minerals for good health.

The trace mineral, selenium, is also another weapon against heart disease and cancer. Selenium is an antioxidant mineral that removes toxins from the body and improve overall health. Try eating foods such as Brazil nut, turkey, chicken, cereals and tuna to get your daily serving of selenium.

Remember that a healthy heart starts with a healthy diet. Cereals, fruits, vegetables, selenium-packed foods and fiber-rich foods are just a few of the foods and nutrients that help to protect the heart. So try to incorporate more of these nutrient-rich foods in your diet and have a healthy heart.
