So, the obvious ones first...
(Various) http://www.gamehippo.com - An enormous resource for free, downloadable games, of every genre. Well worth a look.
(Nethack) http://www.nethack.org - Possibly the most complex, and most amusing roguelike RPG of the lot. Well worth a look.
(Angband) http://angband.oook.cz - Links to Angband itself and the many different versions it has spawned. Personal favorite is NPPAngband. Similar to Nethack in terms of play, though possibly a little less steep on the old learning curve. The site is also a fine place to find information, hints, and a friendly forum regarding the game.
(Ancient Domains of Mystery) http://adom.de - Yet Another Roguelike Game, this one with an explorable wilderness, tons of character races and classes to choose from, and a fairly decent plot. Hasn't been updated for a while, but there are promises...
(CaveStory) http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/ - A delightful little platform game cum RPG, very reminiscent of the old NES and SNES games like Zelda or Metroid.
(Icy Tower) http://icy-tower.en.softonic.com/ - one of those games which is simple, and very hard to explain. You have to jump. A lot.
(Various)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_commercial_game s_released_as_freeware - A list of previously buyable games now released into the public domain. Some are rather old, Windows users might want to have a look at DOSbox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1) to run well.
(FreeCiv) http://www.freeciv.org/ - The open-source version of the ultimate turn-based strategy game. Well worth a look if you haven't already got one of the commercial versions. Lead a civilisation from the stone age to the space age.
(Continuum) http://www.getcontinuum.com/ - Take Asteroids. Make it massively multiplayer and competitive. Then remove the rocks. This is more or less what you'd get. Formerly a commercial game called Subspace, now free to download and play.
