Black Friday is defined as the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States. This day is considered one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Retailers refer it to as Black Friday because it is the start of the season that takes them out of the red (losses) and into the black (profits). Black Friday is the official beginning of the holiday season especially shopping!

Serious shoppers scour the Black Friday - Day after Thanksgiving - ads as soon as they are out. Many people are so into shopping on Black Friday that they keep tabs online as ads are released on websites with sale information and sale prices listed ahead of time! Imagine that! Here are some pointers to make your Black Friday shopping experience in Niagara Falls successful and fun.

Prepare and Organize Ahead of Time.

  1. Check all the ads. Both paper ads and online then…

  2. Make a list of stores you want to hit and the specific items you want including advertised prices. Be particular and organized in your preparation, as it will benefit you on Black Friday. Be sure to have any coupons you anticipate using organized (leave others home so not to weigh you down). Map out your destinations ahead of time as traffic will be busy on this Friday after Thanksgiving and it's best to know where you're going before you're on the road.

  1. There are two types of Black Friday shoppers, decide which one you are. Are you the serious, list in hand, "I have to have *fill in the blank*" type shopper or are you "out for the fun of it" to maybe catch a deal but more importantly because you think its fun and exciting? If you are the first serious type then you need to pay attention to rule number two. If not, rule number three is null and void because time won't be of great importance to you.

  1. My mom always said, "She who travels fastest, travels alone." And she always said this when referring to shopping! Therefore, if you have list in hand on Black Friday then it will be best for you to shop alone. You will be able to maneuver through the crowds better alone. You will have more room in your car if you are alone. You will be able to move on to the next store when you're ready and you won't waste time waiting around for your friend or sister to finish shopping. Time is of essence because many of the best sale items sell out quickly or the prices are only good for a certain amount of time (early bird specials).

  1. Arrive Early! Many people get to stores hours ahead of time to be one of the first people to get into certain stores on Black Friday. If you really want to make sure you get something specific on your list, get there early on this day after Thanksgiving! It is rumored that many malls are going to have Midnight Madness sales. This only means your day will start even earlier. Check the opening times ahead of time (they're not advertised as of yet). This information will be available soon I'm sure.

  1. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes (layers). Black Friday is going to be a busy, long day for you. Be sure to be comfortable and warm (as it is cold this time of year). You don't want to be slowed down by shoes that are hurting your feet. Wear layers since you will be in and out of stores. Also you may be outside for a while so you'll want to start warm.

  1. Be careful with your money and credit cards. You hate to think about these things but there will be people out there who are out to steal. Don't carry a purse (or if you do - wear it). I will be carrying my credit cards in my pants pocket. I will have a minimum amount of cash on hand as well in another pocket. Be smart about where you put your credit cards and money. You don't want to lose it or have it stolen from you. Some people suggest you only pay with cash so you don't overspend though if you refer to rule 8 then you won't have to worry about this as much.

  1. Set a Spending Budget. Plan how much money you anticipate spending the day after Thanksgiving. Have a list of all the people you have to buy for so you can refer to it throughout the day. Have an approximate amount you want to spend on the person so you don't over-spend.

  1. Price Match! Take advantage of retailers price matching policies to keep the majority of your shopping centralized in one store. Some stores offer a "lowest price guarantee". Know ahead of time different stores' policies. This will help gauge your plans for what stores you want to hit!

  2. Bring All the Ads! This is important if you anticipate price matching on Black Friday because many stores will want you to have "proof" of the other store's prices.
