Unique Mascots for Sports

Kimberly Ware
Some mascots are funny while others are weird. But the point of having a mascot is not to just make the fans happy but it also helps create an identity for the team. A mascot enables a team to become more recognizable in the world of sports; it is an excellent way of branding a professional team for marketing purposes, it just makes good business sense. My top five best and funny mascots in professional sports are Harry the Hawk, Sky High, Suns Gorilla, Digger and Guggie.

The first best mascot is Harry the Hawk. Harry the Hawk is the mascot the Atlanta Hawks professional basketball team. He hatched on October 25, 1985 and his position is to be the center of attention. Harry's home is High rise Nest and Phillips Arena Rafters Harry the Hawk's hobby is Stair-sledding, taking (and making) the half-court shot, dancing with kids playing musical chairs, pulling pranks on NBA referees, creating havoc wherever he goes.

Another best mascot is Sky High. Sky High is another mascot for the Atlanta Hawks. He was hatched on November 2, 1996 and his job is the entertain Hawk fans by gliding through the wind and slam dunking the basketball. Sky High's hobbies includes the following: Front flips, 360's, alley-oops and other stunts ending in rim-shakin' dunks; heavily involved in his fraternity - Tri-Dunk (Dunka-Dunka-Dunka).

The third best mascot is the Suns Gorilla. The Suns Gorilla is the official mascot for the professional basketball team the Phoenix Suns. The Gorilla first appeared in the winter of 1980 and he was and success with the fans. He is known for his entertaining antics and dunks which he performs on a trampoline, this is usually done during 3rd and 4th quarters. The Suns Gorilla had the honor of being a secret character in the NBA Jam Tournament Editions video game.

The next best mascot is Digger. Digger is an Irish wolfhound and the official mascot of London Irish rugby union club. Digger won the Best Mascot in Zurich Premiership at the Premier Rugby Marketing Awards held at Twickenham, in May 30, 2003.

The last best mascot is Duggie. Duggie was also a mascot for the London Irish rugby union club. From 2006/2007 season, Duggie joined Digger as his 'naughtier' cousin. Duggie is much taller and slower that Digger. He was and instant success with younger children attending match days, but Digger still remains the Top Dog.

There are many mascots in world of sports. Mascots are great in giving a team its own identity. What is your favorite mascot in the world of professional sports?
