1. The Globus Scriptorium
What looks like a piece of furniture straight out of Star Wars is yours to buy for a mere $7,000. The Globus Scriptorium is an office desk built out of two pieces of polyurethane that form a sphere when closed. A handle on one of the hemispheres allows you to pull the orb in two, transforming it into a comfortable leather chair on one end and workstation on the other. The Globus Scriptorium is supported by aluminum shafts on the bottom which allow it to support up to 1,500 pounds. You can even store some of your office supplies in the orb when it's closed. A Dutch man named Michiel van der Kley is responsible for developing this concept. Although interesting, van der Kley has received mixed responses to his newest work. I suppose it's a matter of taste, or maybe a matter of 7 grand.
2. Arm-Rest Table Pad
Carpel tunnel and muscle pains are common with people who work with computers for hours on end, but with the Arm-Rest Table Pad, long hours at work can be a little less painful. This gadget is basically an extension you can clamp to your computer desk at home or at the office that allows your forearm and elbow to sit comfortably while using the mouse. You can avoid a great deal of grief and it would make the work experience a little more bearable from day to day. This is a perfect ergonomic item for employers to look into buying to keep their employees happy and productive.
3. Nappak Portable Sleeping Cube
Ergonomics and employee morale are becoming more of a concern for employers today, and it's no small wonder that napping at work has become more common as well. A recent study conducted by the MW Institute for Chronobiology concluded that a short nap during the day can greatly increase productivity and elevate mood. The Nappak is an inflatable mattress that is the perfect size for the office (just make sure your boss supports new management ideas). Otherwise the Nappak is useful for many other things, including a guest mattress at your house, or it could serve as a replacement for a sleeping bag on a camping trip or at your kids slumber party. The design too makes it especially interesting and unique, and definitely something that is capable of getting the attention of a lot of people.
4. USB Coffee Warmer
Caffeine and office work seem to go hand in hand, so why not combine the versatility of a USB plug with the fact that your coffee never stays warm? The USB Coffee Warmer does exactly what it says. It works like a hotplate that can sit on your desk and uses the USB plug-in to keep coffee warm throughout the day. Perfect for tea as well. But if you're more interested in cold drinks, there's also a USB Beverage Chiller which will keep your soda can or slushy cold using the same kind of concept.
5. Ultimate Self-Adjusting Chair
Now this is something else. This chair consists of innumerable parts that work independent of each other to adjust itself according to the contours and weight distribution of your body. The Ultimate Self-Adjusting Office Chair will, over time, find the most appropriate position to help regulate posture while maintaining comfort. Aside from it's obvious uses, the chair itself simply looks compelling. This is, of course, just a concept chair and is still being worked on by researchers at Herman Miller. If you consider the number of people who suffer from back pain, this chair could do a lot of good and could eventually be applied to car seats, wheelchairs and even movie seats.
