The coastal area of South Carolina has a wonderful climate and beautiful, lush foliage because of it. Coastal Carolinians can grow a variety of grasses there and because it's semi-tropical, palm trees of certain varieties will flourish along with the scrub pines, dogwoods and oaks. But people need to know what to plant for this zone. It's a more or less transitional zone and when hit by a particularly ferocious winter blast, as sometimes can happen, tender trees and shrubs will succumb if a gardener doesn't plant just the right variety. That's why its really important to have a local nursery or garden shop that can give good advice about varietal planting and instructions for the right soil and soil amendments for this particular coastal area. There are some nurseries that specialize in plants that are right for this area and that are staffed with very experienced people who can give expert advice for any garden problems.

The King Sunset Nursery has been operated by the same family for over 75 years, so they are really experienced in the nursery business and know about the area quite well. Over the years they've expanded to what is now 500 acres of trees and shrubs at wholesale to suppliers and dealers. They are members of the South Carolina Nursery and Landscape Association. They may still sell to the public but check to make sure. They advertise that they have bi-weekly specials and advise to check on the web site for them. I didn't see any listed now, Feb, 2007, but I'd call to see if there are any available. Call them toll-free for advice and information or to tour their nursery: (888) 843-6880

This nursery doesn't just have palm trees. They have a wide variety of plants and specialize in carrying the newest and best species suitable for planting in the Carolina LowCountry. Their palm selections are huge. For avid gardeners and landscapers, there's a great range of birdbaths, benches, fountains and containers. In addition, there's full service landscaping available for both homeowners and developers. There will be two more locations, if not already open, at Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach.
