Best of the Best BBQ Recipes for Labor Day

When Labor Day comes around, I will still be here in the Philippines. As I think of the food and the fun that millions of Americans will be having around the country, I am tempted to throw my own US Labor Day BBQ party for some of my Filipino friends. One of the fun parts of preparing for a BBQ party is coming up with something a bit uncommon or introducing something new to your guests. For my Filipino friends, I would want to introduce s'mores. But for non-Filipino friends, I would want to share some Filipino style BBQ desserts. These grilled desserts are sure to liven up to your Labor Day BBQ celebration.

Filipino Style Grilled Banana (Sinugbang Saging)

Bananas
Sugar (white or brown)
Margarine or Butter

Wooden skewers

Quantity depends on the size of bananas and how many you think your guests will eat.

1. Peel bananas.
2. Place bananas on skewers.
3. Grill over low fire until golden brown.
4. Spread margarine on grilled banana.
5. Sprinkle sugar to taste.
6. Enjoy it while hot!

Grilled Sweet Potato (Sinugbang Camote)

Sweet Potatoes
Sugar (white or brown)
Margarine or Butter

Wooden Skewers

Quantity depends on the size of the sweet potatoes and how many you think your guests will eat.

1. Wash and peel the sweet potatoes.
2. Cut into ½ inch rounds.
3. Place 3 or so rounds on each skewer (depending on the size).
4. Grill sweet potato over low fire until golden brown.
5. Spread margarine on the sweet potatoes.
6. Sprinkle sugar to taste.
7. Enjoy while hot!

If you enjoyed the Grilled Banana or Grilled Sweet Potato recipes, you may also want to try the fried versions called Banana Que and Camote Que, respectively. The ingredients are the same except that margarine (or butter) is replaced with oil. Heat the oil in a large frying pan. When it is hot, add the bananas or sweet potato rounds and sugar. Stir frequently covering the sweet potato rounds or bananas. When sugar caramelizes, turn off the heat. Place banana or sweet potato rounds on a skewer and serve!

These best grilled desserts for Labor Day will melt in your mouth. So I hope that as your grill cools down after your main course that you will try these low fire quick and easy grilled desserts.
