For those new to the area or just visiting or a longtime resident in Tampa who want to start a workout regiment or simply need a gym to go to, then you've come to the right place. Most likely you want a gym that isn't a chain, but one that is locally owned and operated. With those personalized gyms you'll receive a great deal of the right kind of attention from the staff and trainers. There are four gyms right here in Tampa. With each one you can find out more information on what types of gyms, locations and programs offered. Now let's get started.

1.) The Body Construction Personal Training Facility - Tampa, Florida

Roy Taylor is the owner of a regimented facility with weights and other exercise equipment not usually found at the laissez-faire type fitness centers. If you are serious about transforming your body this is the place to be. He is a certified trainer and body transformation specialist.

Body Construction is a cross between old school gym training with the latest high-tech, state-of-the-art equipment. Their 3,000 square foot studio features programs for all levels. This includes stay-at-home moms, business professionals and athletes.

One thing Roy Taylor prides himself about CrossFit Body Construction is you may be a stranger initially, but you'll come out with many friends later. 4505 W. Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, Florida 33609 (813) 289-PUMP (7867)

2.) Smith Health Club - Tampa, Florida

Harry Smith opened his gym 60 years ago in 1950. He has trained many pro wrestlers, body builders and NFL players in that time. The gym is geared for the serious weight lifters with real old school weights. He still trains people even though he's in his 80's. At Smith Health Club there is one side for men and the other side for women. People of all ages can work out here. There is even a racquetball court in addition to various workout equipment. You can't get any locally owned and operated than this. 3415 Horatio Street, Tampa, Florida 33609 (813) 872-0503

3.) Hector's-Elisa's Health Club - Tampa, Florida

Established in 1965 this is another old school, hardcore gym for getting in shape or replacing fat with muscle. If you want a social club disguised as a gym (with little exercise) then this isn't the place for you. They offer reasonable membership fees at this independently owned gym that is small, but friendly and always clean. There are some members who've been coming to Hector's for 40 years. 3330 West Cypress Street, Tampa, Florida 33607 (813) 879-0222

4.) Harbour Island Athletic Club - Tampa, Florida

If personal trainer centers or the old school, workhouse style gyms aren't for you then there is this premiere athletic club. Harbour Island Athletic Club is located in downtown Tampa south of the convention center. Their emphasis is on staying in shape and fitness with its variety of programs and amenities for families and individuals.

Wellness is also another element they offer with massages and other spa treatments. Personal training as well as Pilates is also offered. Harbour Island would be similar to a country club, but only as an upscale fitness center. 900 South Harbour Island Boulevard, Tampa, Florida 33602 (813) 202-1950

Whatever your choice is, whether it's a personal training center, old school gyms or an exclusive athletic club one thing they all have in common is they're not franchised chains. You certainly will receive personal attention. If staying in shape or building muscles is your goal these are the four best gyms to go to in Tampa.
