Dry frizzy hair sometimes appears dull and will revert on the ends after a few hours of being flat ironed. Moisturizing the hair thoroughly by deep conditioning is the first step to achieve a sleek look. Use body heat, hooded bonnet, or hooded dryer to allow the conditioner to sink deep into the hair strands. Use more conditioner on the ends of the hair. The ends of the hair are the oldest and often need more care than the hair closest to the scalp.
Split Ends
prepare to lose the split ends. Sometimes clipping the ends of the hair in its curly state is not enough. It is challenging to see the true number of split ends when the hair is not straightened. If there is a great number of split areas through the hair, take time to focus on eliminating the damaged hair. This may involve clipping just the ends, or eliminated several inches of split ends. Wearing the hair straight is a great option for women who choose not to use chemical straightness. The ends of the hair cannot be severely split when wearing straight styles. The ends will not hold a curl, and the ends will revert quickly after flat ironing. The damage is easy to see when the hair is straight.
Straightening Serums
Select a light straightening serum and heat protectant that encourages the hair to repel moisture. Avoid serums and heat protectants that have water as one of the first ingredients. Water causes hair reversion and will not help the style to last longer. The Paul Mitchell Skinny line of products works well for kinky textured hair.
Chase Method
Start with clean hair that has been air dried or blown dry. Flat iron the hair with a ceramic or other coated type of flat iron. Avoid using flat irons that have a ceramic coating. The coating will start to melt away after the first few uses. Before flat ironing the hair set aside a small tooth rat tail comb and a two sided brush. The brush folds down and clamps upon itself. Start with small sections. Use the rat tail comb to chase the flat iron on the first pass. One the second pass of the flat iron use the double sided brush to immediately follow the flat iron.
Now that the hair is straight, clip the split ends. Hair that is severely damaged may need a professional stylist to help shape the hair and eliminate the split ends. Deep conditioning with care and clipping the ends will help prevent having to cut off large amounts of hair. Split ends that are not addressed will continue to travel up the hair shaft. Use these tips to help treat split ends and have salon quality results when flat ironing kinky hair.
