Start with clean hair. All hair types and textures can use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Co-washing or conditioner washing works well for maintaining kinky or curly styles. However when preparing for a blow out or flat ironed style the shampoo helps to remove product build up that may weigh down the hair. If the scalp is especially dirty from styling products try a clarifying shampoo. Follow the cleansing with a deep conditioning treatment to help strengthen the damaged hair.
Section the hair in four or more sections depending on hair length. Use duckbill clips, ouch less bands, or snag free hair accessories are on hand. Avoid using rubber bands or ponytail holders with metal on the inner band. Apply heat protectant to one section and smooth through with a wide tooth comb or the fingers. Good heat protectants to try are Chi Iron Guard or Entwine Argan oil.
Ionic Professional Hair Dryer
Start blow drying the hair with an ionic professional hair dryer on the low heat setting. Use a natural bristle round brush or Denman brush to smooth and stretch the hair. If the hair is kinky or curly and there is no brush available, hold the hair taught while directing the air over the entire length of the hair. Try the medium high setting in the thicker areas of the hair that may take longer to dry. Use smaller sections if it takes more than three to five minutes to become dry. Avoid the highest setting of heat.
Consider wearing braid out when the flat ironed or blow dried hair start to become frizzy. Style the hair in a bun or up do to keep the straight hair style a few more days. Apply a light coating of olive oil or argan oil to protect the ends of the hair. Use accessories like hair sticks or silk headbands for variety.
Using lower heat and small sections is a great way to enjoy blow outs or flat ironed styles. Sleeping on a silk pillow case will help to preserve the style. Try going longer in between heat styling sessions. Use these tips to help minimize heat damage.
