An important aspect of seat layout is the number of and types of seats you will need to place in your home theater, You should not only have enough seats for yourself and your family but also there should be a few for your guests or visitors who will also share your home theater experience with you. The available space and the size of your home theater screen will determine the size of your seats as well as their location in the home theater.
The viewing distance will depend on the size of the screen and the size and number of seats will be dictated by the viewing distance. If very little space remains after accounting for the viewing distance then you may have to compromise on the size and number of seats. The optimum viewing distance is usually given in your equipment manual and it is best to stick to it because it is scientifically determined after taking into account many important factors.
It is therefore very important to keep seating layout in mind when choosing the home theater system and the room that will make up your home theater. Also the viewing angle constraints will limit the width of your seating layout. Too wide a viewing angle will give a distorted view of the pictures. The nearer you go to the screen the less wide your seating layout will be. The instruction manual that came with your home theater system will give you an idea about the viewing angle for the particular screen size.
While planning your seating layout you must ensure that all the parts of the TV screen are visible to all the viewers in your home theater. Of course if the number of seats is going to be very small, then one row of seats will be adequate. But if there are going to be multiple rows of seats then you have to ensure that the people in the second and other rows have unobstructed view of all parts of the TV screen. For this you have to think of providing platforms or risers. It is recommended that the optimum height per row should be 1 foot. If the roof is too low then you may have to make do with a height of 6-8 inches per row.
If your seating is wide enough then arranging the seats along a curve so that the TV screen is equidistant from all the seats will ensure optimum viewing for every one. Otherwise those in the corner seats will have to keep their heads turned for long periods leading to neck complaints. When it comes to choosing the types of seats that will find a place in your home theater, overstuffed living chairs or sofas from your household will provide the cheapest solution. However you may not have enough of these to spare and the next best but costlier option is to go for dedicated seats specifically designed for home theater viewing.
With the increasing popularity of home theaters many home theater furniture pieces are available in stores. They come in all shapes and sizes to suit individual requirements. The higher priced home theater seats come with recliner mechanisms, foot rests, beverage holders etc. However if you are alone then your favorite recliner with foot rest and arm rests and a side table can do the job best. Whatever you ultimately choose for seating for your home theater's seating should provide the maximum enjoyment and relaxation.
