Best Homemade Halloween Costumes

"A Rose by Any Other Name is a Handmade Halloween Costume."

Angela W. La Fon
Every fall parents that participate in Halloween costumes are faced with a decision: buy a costume or make a homemade costume? We've created many homemade Halloween costumes including Indiana Jones, Wall E, a duck, a John Deere repairman, the Statue of Liberty, Diego and more. All of these handmade (and no sew) costumes were fun to create but this is my all time favorite handmade Halloween costume.

One spring my daughter was gifted with a pink rose bush in the spring. She enjoyed caring for her rose bush and displaying mini vases of her roses all summer long. It led to an inspiration. "Do you think I could be a rose bush for Halloween?" Of course!

Materials for a homemade rose bush Halloween costume:

Green sweat suit pants and sweat shirt

Runners of artificial mini roses

Safety pins

Hair clips

A watering can

Optional:

A green hat

Directions:

I simply safety pinned the runners of mini roses, pins inside, in spots. I allowed them to be wild and flowing but not draping near the feet for trick or trick safety.

Just in case a safety pin can undone, (none did) she wore long underwear under the sweat suit which added warmth anyway.

We used hair clips to clip in individual roses in her hair but since it ended up being cold, she wore a green stocking hat she already owned.

The clincher:

My daughter carried an orange watering can to collect candy in. Believe it or not, when the children had chosen my a new watering can for Mother's Day that year it was orange which was perfect for Halloween but it needn't be orange to be the perfect complement to this homemade Halloween costume.

The benefits of making this homemade Halloween costume:

The green sweat suit was for perfect for play in the fall or wearing to basketball practice in the winter, so although it was a purchase there was no money wasted.

The mini rose runners were gifted to a talented floral designer who was able to reuse them in a gift wreath.

We used a hat and a watering can we had on hand.

The costume was warm and safe.

The Halloween costume was completely original.

The Halloween costume was personal and inspired by a hobby my daughter loves.

The photos were adorable.

My daughter learned hands on lessons about homemade, reused and reusable.

The costume was inexpensive as the sweat suit was under $10.00 but worn for a year.

The only splurge here was another $10.00 for artificial flowers that found a good a home after we used them.

Of course this floral homemade costume idea could be adapted to any kind of flower from a sunflower to a lily plant. Oh wouldn't that be a cute homemade Halloween costume for a little girl named Lilly? Come to think of it, wouldn't the handmade rosebush costume be really cute for a little girl named Rose? Either way, it is an adorable handmade Halloween costume for a child by any name.
