Best Horror Movies of the Past Decade

James Varga
A lot of horror movies have been released this past decade. Some good, some not so good. These are the best of the best from the horror genre in that time frame.

Stephen King's The Mist (2007) - Most Stephen King movies released since the 1970's aren't that good. However this one is superb and I loved every minute of it. The special effects are great.

28 Days Later (2002) - Very cleverly done. The fact that the Rage virus in this movie is animal born makes the movie more frightening because of the possibility something like this may actually happen.

Shaun of the Dead (2004) - The movie that brought horror-comedy to the forefront. Nice sight gags and amusing scenes throughout, especially with Shaun's best friend Ed.

Dawn of the Dead (2004) - Best horror remake that was released this decade. Very well done and has some legitimate scary moments in it. The realistic special effects make it even more of a treat.

Friday the 13th (2009) - Surprisingly very well done. The characters either make you want to see them survive Jason Voorhees' homicide spree or make you want to see Jason get them.

Zombieland (2009) - When I first saw the ads for this, I thought that I would despise it. The opposite was true. Probably the best horror film of the decade overall.

The Descent (2005) - An excellent British horror movie about female cavers who are attacked by underground humanoid creatures.

The Host (2006) - Made in South Korea, this movie about an amphibious mutated creature that kidnaps a little girl as the government figures out how to deal with the problem.

Otis (2008) - If you haven't seen this movie, rent it as soon as you can. It's about a disturbed man named Otis who is a forty year old pizza delivery man in a high school prom 'roleplay fantasy' with his kidnap victim he has trapped in his dungeon lair.

Trick r' Treat (2009) - How this movie didn't get put in the theaters is beyond me. This is the Pulp Fiction of horror movies. Four interwoven stories with various characters appearing in multiple stories, most notably Sam the mysterious trick-or-treater. Well made and very entertaining.

Honorable mentions: The Cook, Cloverfield, Slither, Sea Beast, Never Cry Werewolf, and Quarantine.
