Here are some very unique (and delicious) hot dog toppings.
The Waldorf dog. In this twist on the classic Waldorf salad, use walnuts, raisins and diced apples to top a hot dog. Sweet and savory are a surprisingly good combination, and the texture and flavor of the walnuts round it all off nicely.
The Reuben dog. Instead of corned beef on rye, start with a hot dog on a bun. Add Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing.
The Salty dog. Admittedly not the healthiest choice, but it's fine for a treat once in a while. This is a hot dog topped with diced ham, green olives and just enough melted Cheez Whiz to hold it all together.
The Picnic dog. Top a hot dog with coleslaw and barbecue sauce for a true picnic flavor. (This one is especially good in the winter.)
The Mexican (or Chi-wow-wow) dog. Salsa, sour cream, jalapenos and Monterey Jack cheese give this hot dog a Mexican flavor that makes you say "Wow!"
The Hot -- and We do Mean Hot -- Dog. Put horseradish sauce, spicy mustard and banana peppers on a hot dog to get a truly hot dog.
The Greek dog. Top a hot dog with tzatziki, tomatoes, Kalamata olives, raw onion and feta cheese to give it a Greek flair.
The Deluxe dog. This hot dog features lettuce, mayo and tomato.
The Chili Cheese dog. Not too original, but worth a mention. It's a good way to use up leftover chili, or you can use a can of store-bought chili with American cheese.
The Buffalo dog. A Buffalo hot dog has Buffalo-style wing sauce and chunky blue cheese dressing.
The BLT dog. A hot dog topped with bacon, lettuce and tomato.
The Bacon Cheddar dog. If it's good enough for a hamburger, it's good enough for a hot dog.
Next time you think that hot dogs are getting ho-hum, spice them up with some of these toppings!
Note: If you're concerned about the fat and sodium, chicken or turkey dogs can be substituted.
