Best Interior Design Trends of 2009

Interior design is a lot like fashion design; trends come and go in and out in cycles. Some always seem to be right, some are very wrong, and others depend on the interpretation. In no particular order, here are some of the best trends I have seen for 2009.

Chalkboard paint. Popular for longer than a year, it shows no sign of going anywhere soon. The common places for use are kids rooms, offices, and kitchens. It's often used as an accent wall. Great for keeping kids occupied, jotting down quick notes or just a grocery list on the fridge, chalkboard paint has many uses.

Handmade items. With the recent downturn in the economy, people have been turning to other ways of decorating so as to avoid buying mass produced items. It is often quoted as a way to give back to the community. Also those who have lost jobs, or have a need to create more income find they can do so by being creative. Buying local art. This trend also ties into handmade items. Buying locally is a cost effective way to enjoy great design while putting money back into your area. Owls and Aviary. As a subject for pattern on textiles, owls and birds in general, has been very popular. On pillows, curtains, dishtowels, the pattern lends well to abstraction. They can also be found on pottery, being made into vases, and other accessories.
