Best Italian Food in Wausau

Tina Herzog
I love Italian food. I crave the pesto, garlic, marinara, and Parmesan sauces regularly. I am also a noodle freak. If there are no noodles, it isn't Italian food. In Wausau, WI we have three Italian restaurants that are sure to please: Iozzo's Italian Food, Mino's Cucina Italiana, and Carmelo's Italian Restaurant. Come, join me for a delightful meal. We can experience the "old world" flavor; together.

Carmelo's Italian Restaurant

Carmelo's was established in 1986. The Olivia Family stresses the casual dining atmosphere. They are located at 3607 North Mountain Road in Wausau (Rib Mountain, township, to be exact). The establishment is fantastic. They are rated number 11 of the top 25 restaurants in town. The menu is filled with variety. They offer daily specials from $10.75 to $27.50. I was surprised to see a Ala Carte section. This section has half orders and smaller portions ranging from $6.25 (fettuccine alfredo) to $8.50 (chicken ravioli). The service was nice, food was high quality, and the atmosphere; casual. The portions were definitely adequate. The location is smack dab in the middle of a shopping mecca. You can eat and get your tires changed at the same time. We all are stretched for time these days; multi-tasking is a good thing.

Iozzo's Italian Food

Iozzo's is located at 3115 Camp Philips Road in Wausau (Weston area, to be exact). The dining atmosphere is extraordinary. It feels like you are in a mine/cave. We all enjoy being in a unique place. The dress is a little less casual than Carmelo's. I was impressed with the pricing. The menu was easy to follow and great on the wallet. The prices ranged from $11.00 to $25.00. The waitress was fun, too. She kept us entertained the entire meal. Always alert and prompt with requests; she made our visit worth every penny. Simply take the Camp Philips exit off of Hwy 29 East. Head north for a few miles; until you are leaving town. Iozzo's is nestled amongst the trees, on the east side of the road. It's location is cozy and relaxed. Wrap your arms around that special someone as you enter a great place to dine.

Mino's Cucina Italiana

Mino's was established in 1993 By Mino and Maria Spada. The restaurant is at 900 Golf Club Road in Wausau (Riverview, to be exact). The dining is more formal than its competitors. You should dress the part, trust me, it is a fairytale experience. The menu is huge and very descriptive; making choices difficult. I want to try it all; someday, I will. The prices are a bit more top end. They items range from $18.95 (chicken w/spinach pesto sauce and sun-dried tomatoes) to $46.95 (surf and turf regal--10 oz black Angus tenderloin w/Gorgonzola, 4 oz Maine lobster tail or Red King Crab legs and butter dipping sauce). The owners are from Italy and serve nothing but authentic Italian cuisine. The place is easy to find. You exit I39 at Bridge Street, and head east to 6th Street. Once on 6th head north to Golf Club Road. The street name says it all; golfing is within walking distance. Everything about Mino's screams classy. The service was top notch, food was fantastic, and the atmosphere; romantic.

Satisfying Your Cravings

In conclusion, Wausau has a great variety of Italian dining available. If great food and a super atmosphere is what you crave; satisfaction is guaranteed. I never realized how wonderful my hometown was. I love food. It motivates, fulfills, and energizes every part of me. I go out of my way to ensure my meals are always good. Spending a few extra dollars, to be completely satisfied, is worth it. There you have it, the best of the best. Now, plan your next meal at one of our Italian restaurants and feel the "old world".
