I recently moved away from Portland and I am very disappointed in the restaurant choices in my new town. I loved living in Portland because there is a huge selection of many great restaurants. I love Japanese food, and there are a lot of good choices of restaurants, and these are the very best Japanese restaurants in Portland, Oregon.

Ichiban- This is a great Japanese restaurant located in West Hills, Portland. The price at this restaurant varies greatly depending on what you order. The have a great selection of sushi and sashimi, but it is quite expensive. For the budget conscientious there are great combination plates that come with an entree, soup, salad, rice, and pickles. Their entrees range from tempura to yakisoba. They also have some Korean options like Korean BBQ beef, and kim chee. If you don't get sushi two people can eat here for around $20. You can call them at (503) 641-0331

Mio Sushi- This is a small restaurant located in Northwest Portland. The restaurant is very cozy and a great place to take a date. They offer many specials on their handwritten signs. They have many delicious and unique dishes. The have all the usual Japanese fare from the typical sushi's, ramen and udon soups, and bento entrees. This is a great place to try some of the more unusual Japanese specialties. I love their sushi shrimp pizza, it is a really unique item with a combination of shrimp, fish, seaweed, all baked with a special sauce. Dinner for two should cost around $30. You can call for their hours and more information at (503) 221-1469.

Big Dan's West Coast Bento- This is a very popular Japanese restaurant located in Northwest, Portland. Big Dan's is only open for lunch, and you will often find a line out the door, but service is fast so you won't be waiting long. They have excellent Japanese box lunches that include options such as meat skewers, yakitori, and vegetable curries. They also have several side dishes such as their delicious humbao. Lunch for two people is very inexpensive and will cost around $10. Call for their exact hours (503) 227-1779.

Sushi Takahashi- This is a very unique and fun sushi restaurant in downtown, Portland. The best part about this restaurant is the train! They have a train that circles around the oval sushi bar, and delivers the food to the customers. You pick what you want and take the plate off the train, at the end of the meal the waiter figures out your bill by adding up the number of plates. This is a great experience and is a lot of fun. This is also a great place to take kids, because they are sure to be entertained by the train. The prices are very reasonable, and its easy to keep track of what you are getting and make sure you stay within your budget. You can call for more information at (503) 224-3417.

Toney Bento- This is a excellent Japanese restaurant located in Hawthorne. They have an extensive menu, that is all very reasonably priced. You will often find many students here because of their large portions and cheap prices. They have everything from miso soup with udon noodles, to many different bento bowls that have different types of meat and tons of rice. One of the best parts of this restaurant is their sauce station. They have an area where you can customize you dish with a selection of 12 or more sauces. The sauces are all complementary and delicious. Two people can easily eat here for $10. You can call Toney Bento at (503) 234-4441.

Saburo's- This Japanese restaurant offers very fresh sushi, and very generous portions. They also have many delicious non-sushi items, that are prepared wonderfully. The have combination dinners that cost around $10 per person and include teriyaki, gyoza, or tempura with soup, salad, rice, and ice cream. Their combination dinners are a great chance to sample different items. This restaurant is very popular and if possible you should try to get advance reservations.
