All that Glitters Doesn't Have to Be Solid Gold

Jewelry is an accessory that can make or break any outfit. A heavy gold Byzantine choker polishes off a business suit, jeans and crisp white blouse or a sheath very nicely but not everyone can afford a gold choker. Platinum and gold have been the traditional precious metals for many jewelry items but with the change in style and the economy, it's not always the first choice for accessories especially since jewelry can be very costly. Other metals have hit the scene and nearly every jewelry item can be found in an array of materials to accommodate any style. Check out these different types of materials for your next jewelry purchase.

Silver

Although silver is considered a precious metal it is far more affordable than either platinum or gold. The choices of jewelry that can be found in silver is limitless. Bracelets, rings, necklaces and pendants can be found plain or adorned and really pops against tan skin. As with the other precious metals the cost will be affected by its weight and brand name. Pieces created by David Yurman and Scott Kay can really put a dent in your wallet but there are many designers that have created "knock-offs" to make them affordable for any budget.

Tungsten

This "hard, brittle, corrosion-resistant, gray to white metallic element" has taken its place in the accessories world. This item's traditional uses were for electrical purposes such as light filaments but in the more recent times it has become a very popular substitute for gold, platinum and silver. Many jewelry items have been created with this metal and has created a name for itself by being of good weight and very hardy for men's wedding bands. Within the last couple of years it has also been used to replace precious metals for women's wedding bands, engagement rings and sets.

Vermeil

If you're looking to wear 18 karat gold but can't afford the price there is another alternative open to you. Vermeil is sterling silver that has been coated in 18 karat gold and has become a great choice for those on a a budget but also for retailers who are making items more affordable for thier patrons. Mid-to-high-end retailers such as Ross-Simons has been creating many fashionable peices in this material to open the doors for all shoppers. If you prefer 14 karat gold over 18 karat there are also retailers that have been creating silver pieces layered in 14 karat gold which makes the jewelry even more affordable than vermeil.

Some of the costume jewelry is so lovely. The same thing in gold would be too heavy to wear and astronomical in price.
