Best John Candy Film Appearances

SE
John Candy appeared in many films and most are memorable. Some of the most memorable and funniest roles, at least for me, follow.

In Cool Runnings, John Candy played Irv, the Jamaican bobsled team's coach. Who can forget his attempt to get the bobsledders acclimated to cold weather by making Sanka sit in the back of an ice cream truck? And let's not overlook what Irv said when he led his bobsledders in prayer: "Our Father, who art in Calgary, Bobsled be thy name. Thy kingdom come, gold medals won, on Earth as it is in Turn Seven. With Liberty and Justice for Jamaica and Haile Selassie. Amen." Irv may have been eccentric and a little misguided, but just about everything he says or does cracks me up after repeated viewings.

Spaceballs contains many comedic roles and John Candy's role as Barf shouldn't be ignored. Granted, the whole movie gives many of us a laugh. Barf isn't the biggest role but John Candy makes the most of this role, delivering lines with ease. From Barf's first line - "I'm a mog; half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend." - to the last, pretty much each line continues to be funny.

John Candy's appearance as Uncle Buck may be the best. He plays an uncle with eccentric child rearing methods quite convincingly. Uncle Buck may be a bit maniacal as well. After all, he has no trouble scaring the hell out of Bug with his hatchet, does he? And he knows exactly how to strike fear in a teenage girl's heart: "How would you like to spend the next several nights wondering if your crazy, out of work, bum uncle will shave your head while you sleep? See you in the car." 18 years after it's 1989 release, this movie is still hilarious.

The Great Outdoors is one of John Candy's great film appearances in the late 1980s. The water skiing scene never fails to get me laughing. And the scene where Chet and Roman (Dan Akroyd) battle the bat, armed with sporting equipment is classic. And although you want to sympathize with Chet's intentions of giving his family a great vacation, you can't help but laugh at each and every mishap.

Summer Rental has John Candy playing Jack Chester, an overworked father who is sent on a family vacation. The vacation does not start on a good note, as the Chester family discovers they have been staying in the wrong house. After relocating to the correct beach rental, Jack goes into a bar one day. The bartender and restaurant owner, Scully, asks what he can get him. The response is classic: "How about... drunk." This always makes me laugh. Haven't we all had days like this?

Lastly, Planes, Trains and Automobiles can't be ignored. John Candy plays a traveling salesman who glues himself to a fellow traveler, played by Steve Martin. Candy's character continues to annoy the hell out of Martin's character, but you end up liking him anyway. He may be super annoying but he is also genuinely nice. That's not always an easy line to walk. And the image of the two of them driving down the highway after the car has burst into flames is unforgettable.

I think every era needs a John Candy. I'm trying to think who this generation's John Candy is. Nothing is coming to mind. Any suggestions?
