West Coast on Lake Michigan

We love our state parks in Michigan. And we sure have a lot to love! If you enjoy camping, boating, wind-surfing, skim boarding, hiking, nature observation and all the good stuff that goes with camping, then you will want to plan a camping trip to Michigan very soon! We live in western Michigan in lovely Grand Haven, Michigan. We've explored the coastal state parks of Lake Michigan pretty carefully. We've stayed at quite a few state parks on the Michigan side of Lake Michigan. Here are our favorite state parks in western Michigan. I'll follow the coast from the border of Michigan north to the bridge.

Warren Dunes State Park: Almost at the border of Michigan and Indiana lies the lovely Warren Dunes State Park. Sawyer, Michigan in Berrien County is a tiny hamlet that boasts a campground on Lake Michigan as well as Warren Woods, a wooded state park as well. Warren Dunes has all the amenities for camping and hiking. There is are several nature trails and cross-country ski trails as well.

Saugatuck State Park: Farther north in Allegan county, Saugatuck is a beautiful resort community rich in history.

Holland State Park: Holland State Park is situated on Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa. This is a beautiful sand dune campground.

Grand Haven State Park: another beach state park, Grand Haven is smaller, full service park, located literally a stone's throw from downtown.

Ludington State Park: You've got to make quite a trek to get out to lovely Ludington State Park, located on the Au Sable River. This is a gorgeous campground partly on the beach and partly in an evergreen forest.

Mears State Park: Located in tiny Pentwater, Michigan this beach campground is perfect for those wishing to step back in time to a small lakeside resort town atmosphere.

Orchard Beach State Park: Perched along a bluff on Lake Michigan, this campground is meadow land. There is a dune climb to get to the beach, but it's not difficult, except for senior citizens.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park
: Not a state park, but a national park, Sleeping Bear Dunes Campground is rural Michigan lakeside camping at its best. Perfect for the semi rustic camper who still desires some basic amenities.

Leelanau State Park: Located at the tip of the Leelanau peninsula in Traverse City Michigan on Grand Traverse Bay, this state park is in some of the grandest country in the world.

Wilderness State Park: When you get to the bridge, turn left and you'll head out of Mackinac City to the northernmost campground in Michigan's lower peninsula. Located on Lake Michigan the water here is blue green like an aquamarine.

I'm originally from Illinois. We used to go to Warren Dunes when I was in high school - great fun climbing the dunes and then running down them. Love the picture accompanying your article.

I remember Wilderness SP the best. Years ago we visited there. He-man hubby built a fire, put on a can of beans to heat. Suddenly, Poof! Beans spewed in every direction, covering the nearby tree. He'd forgotten to open the lid to provide an airhole. That one's imbedded in my memory.

These sound great to go to. We have a lot of forest preserves here in Il and my kids love to be outside. These parks would be great to visit.
