Librarian Picks for Tween-Friendly Magazines

Magazine subscriptions make great Christmas gifts, or other occasion gifts, for those hard-to-buy-for tweens. Tween boys can be especially difficult to buy for, but magazine subscriptions make a great Christmas gift for just about anyone of any age. Sure you could get the tween boy in your life yet another video game, but why not look for something really different? As a school librarian I review dozens of magazines when choosing what to purchase for my five libraries. So check out these librarian picks for the best magazine subscriptions for tween boys.

Boys' Life. While this magazine is the official magazine of the Boy Scouts of America, non-Boy Scout tween boys will enjoy it as well. Boys' Life features such article subjects as camping, fishing, sports, outdoor activities, and jokes. Each issue of this magazine for tween boys features a fiction short story and comics. There is a Cub Scout version of Boys' Life so make sure you choose the Boy Scout version so that you get the items of interest for your tween boy.

Sports Illustrated for Kids. While tween boys may think they need a subscription to the adult version of Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids is really more their speed. Kid-friendly articles on sports of all kinds, free tear-out sports cards in each issue, and a great companion website make Sports Illustrated for Kids an excellent magazine subscription gift for tween boys.

Games. Games magazine is a great magazine subscription for tween boys. Games features brain teasers, puzzles, contests, and trivia each month. Games magazine also reviews board games, online games, and video games. While Games magazine is perfectly suited to teens and adults, it is also a great magazine subscription for intelligent, curious tween boys.

Nickelodeon Magazine. Nickelodeon Magazine is a great magazine for tween boys, especially those with a sense of humor. Each issue of Nickelodeon Magazine features comics, ideas for pranks and jokes, strange stories, celebrity news, and puzzles. Just like the companion television station, Nickelodeon Magazine is truly aimed at the tween crowd and is the perfect magazine subscription for tween boys.

Tween boys can be very difficult to shop for, at Christmas or any time of the year. If you want something different than the typical video game, try these magazine subscriptions for tween boys. Take it from this school librarian, these magazine subscriptions will interest just about every tween reader, even the most reluctant.

I love this! I love giving magazine subscriptions to kids. My son is getting some Marvel comics for his b-day, shhh! I also like National Geographic for Kids too. Great, great list and topic!
