La Palma Mexicatessen is combines the best of Mexican food by offering made-to-order restaurant food and also unique grocery items. La Palma sells fresh masa for making fresh tortillas and homemade tamales. La Palma restaurant is very inexpensive and the food is very authentic and tasty.

Papalote has California-Mexican cuisine, and it is amazing. The food is very fresh and very innovative. Papalote has a lot of delicious vegetarian dishes, including soyrizo (vegan chorizo), veggie burritos and nachos, great mole, and more. The horchata is fresh and very thirst-quenching. This is my personal favorite Mexican restaurant in San Francisco.

El Farolito is a very authentic Mexican restaurant, with somewhat dirty tables and chaotic atmosphere. But the place is always packed and the food is highly regarded. The food is dirt cheap and you'll be sure to find whatever scary meat items you want. El Farolito has locations all over the Mission in San Francisco.

Finally a great Mexican restaurant NOT in the Mission district of San Francisco! Tortilla Heights has the most amazing chips and salsa-and the most amazing veggie nachos! This place has a loud bar scene at night, so if you want just the food, go early. A little more expensive than other hole-in-the-wall Mexican joints in San Francisco.
