Best Microbrews in Indiana

Jonna Norris
Indiana has its fair share of breweries. However, only a handful of these have earned the title of microbrewery, a name used for breweries producing less than 10,000 barrels of beer and ale per year with their main market being local. Don't let the lack of big name, big money and big advertising sway you though. These microbreweries produce some of the highest quality beer that will ever grace your gullet. What's more, many of them work to give back to their communities by giving a percentage of their sales to local organizations and buying local as much as possible.

Upland Brewery, located in my hometown of Bloomington, is Indiana's largest microbrewery. They are obviously popular in many restaurants and stores around town, but their beer and ale is also distributed throughout Indiana and even in parts of Kentucky and Wisconsin. Upland has numerous delicious brews, but my favorite is their flagship beer, Upland Wheat Ale. It's brewed with organic ingredients, including coriander, chamomile, and orange peel, giving it a nice tart taste. It's very easy-going and isn't at all bitter. It has a beautiful golden appearance and is a best-selling Indiana beer.

Back Road Brewery is another great microbrewery in Indiana. Located at 1315 Michigan Avenue in LaPorte, it's main distribution area is northern Indiana, including Michigan City, Lafayette, and South Bend. My favorite brew from there is the Belle Gunness Stout. Never mind that it's named after the infamous Indiana serial killer of 1908, Belle Gunness. It's an Irish-style, very dark beer that's available year round. The smooth mix of chocolate, coffee and roasty flavors are amazing. It's definitely one to try if you like dark beer. Even if you don't, try it anyway. It might change your mind.

The Autumn Ale is another great brew that you should try from Back Road Brewery. It's a seasonal ale, and incorporates everything you love about autumn. Real pumpkin, cinnamon sticks and spices all add up to a rich malty brew with perfectly-balanced flavor.

These are only a few of the delicious brews that Indiana's microbreweries have to offer. Their distinctive flavor and high quality make them a cut above the big-name brews that can be found in any liquor store or supermarket. Look for them in your area and, if you're in a restaurant where they are offered, give them a try. If you are a beer lover, chances are they will surpass any you've ever tasted. Cheers.
