Best Moments in the Gears of War Video Games

While the Gears of War video games have received enormous amounts of praise from critics and gamers, the series isn't known for its storyline. Many players feel the plot of the games lack depth, even though there definitely have been some shocking moments. Now that the trilogy is finished, these are some of the most memorable parts of the Gears of War games.


The Carmine Family
I'll never forget when Anthony Carmine got killed in the original Gears. The fighting was over and all he did was stand up to say his Lancer kept jamming. Then from a nearby building, a Locust Sniper shoots him in the head. It was shocking that it happened so early in the game.

In the second Gears game, players met Anthony's younger brother, Ben. It's in Act Two where Ben meets his untimely death. He falls out of a Raven that is being hit with debris and is swallowed by a Riftworm. This second Carmine death caused quite a stir with fans. For Gears 3, gamers were allowed to vote on the fate of the oldest brother, Clayton. After witnessing two brothers die, it's not surprising that fans wanted Clay to live.


Dom's wife
Dom's search for his wife, Maria, is a major part of Gears 2. He spends much of the game following false leads until he gets a tip that she was captured by the Locusts. When Marcus and Dom finally track her down in a Locust prison, poor Maria is a shell of her former shelf. Dom realizes that she's too broken from torture to recover. As an act of mercy, Dom apologizes, tell her he loves her, and shoots her in the head. You can feel his pain and desperation. It's an absolutely shocking and sad moment.


Adam Fenix lives
It was thought that Marcus' father, Adam, died during the Battle of Ephyra . Marcus even spent four years in prison because he left his squad when he tried to save his father. It wasn't until the end of Gears of War 2 that we hear a mysterious message from Adam. In the message, he seems to know about the sinking of Jancinto and asks "What have you done?" At the beginning of Gears 3, it's confirmed that Adam is indeed alive and has been kept at a secret base named Azura.


Dom's sacrifice
In Gears of War 3, Dom is still grieving over the death of Maria. When Delta squad decides to go into Maria's hometown of Mercy to get to a filling station, Dom assures everyone that he can handle it. He sees Maria's family tomb, leaving his COG tag and her necklace on it. As the squad becomes surrounded by the Lambent and Locusts, Dom tells Marcus and the others to leave. He gets in a truck and drives it into a tanker, killing himself and the enemies. This moment was very shocking. I never thought Dom would die. It was difficult to play the game for awhile after witnessing his sacrifice.


There are other moments like Tai's suicide or the revelation that Adam knew the Locust queen before Emergence Day that make gamers stop and think. While the Gears games have been criticized for not including enough story or emotion, there are plenty of parts that have shocked and saddened me. Now that the war is over, maybe the COGs will finally have some peace.
