Best Mother and Daughter Vacation

Surprise at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Katheryn (Kat) Markle
My daughter and I went on vacation to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in the summer of 1999. We stayed at the Days Inn Motel at North Myrtle Beach. It is located across the road from a small airport that we were told celebs used so they could stay low key from the media.

Incidentally, there was a pool out front of the Days Inn Motel, and my daughter and I put our suits on and got into the pool. We were playing around and swimming, having silly fun. Oh, my daughter would have been 20 I think that year. I was just chillin' in the water, hanging onto the side, and I noticed a few guys standing outside the door of the motel room, a couple of 'em smoking wacky tobacky I think from the smell in the air.

I told my daughter that I bet those guys were a band b/c they just looked like stereotypical rock band guys! They had that look in manner, dress, and the hairdos.too. I just had this intuitive feeling that somehow I was gonna wish I knew who they were NOW so I could pay more attention.

My daughter got out of the pool, walked across the parking lot to go to our room, which was the third one over from these guys. They stared a hole through her and I felt uneasy. Hey, I am safety minded because life has taught me to do so. I did not like it at all. We were far from home and anything could have happened out there in this crazy world. So I got out of the pool and they stared at me just like they had her and when I got up real close, they were friendly and said hello to me, so I did the same and entered my room.

Next, we got ready for our night out on the town. The House Of Blues was our choice because the band "Fuel " was going to perform. I liked them and thought it would be awesome if we got to see this band. I planned to brag and get photos to show off at work because my boss loved Fuel! Ha!

So we went to the House Of Blues at Myrtle Beach and let me say that it was the best time we have ever had on vacation and the best concert we have ever heard, and we both have been to a lot of music concerts.

By the way, we had no clue that Buckcherry would be there playing, but they were there. My daughter and I about freaked when Buckcherry came out and I screamed, "Oh my gosh! It is those guys from our Days Inn motel!" Low and behold, we kept looking at each one on stage and it was them!

My daughter said she was gonna go down in the mosh pit and look up close...She had always wanted to crowd surf, and I could tell she really wanted to but was a little backward. I encouraged her and pushed her on. "Go for it!," I yelled! So she managed to squeeze herself down into the pit with people so packed in it tight, it was wild and crazy! After a while, I saw her down there and she made it up to the front and her hand touched the stage.

Next, the rock band members looked at my daughter as she waved and smiled at them. I saw them glancing at both of us and I bet they recognized us from the motel. Needless to say, my daughter had me laughing so hard looking at her in the mosh pit because she had let people pick her up and surf her! She got around pretty good, then she was sucked under the people and hurt her foot and leg. She laughed and laughed, as we both did later.

Ten years ago, Buckcherry were not quite as popular as they have become since then, but a couple of their songs had been hits. I cannot recall all of the names, but one done was "All Lit Up." Another one was " For the Movies." This concert was the best and they all lit up the house that night! Yeah, they were all lit up for sure! What energy this rock band had that night as they performed for a crowd of people, most of whom were drinking alcohol so as the night wore on, they became full of spunk!

Meanwhile, the main singer, Josh Todd, jumped across the stage with his long legs and naked chest and reminded me of Mick Jagger somewhat. On the front of his body there were tattoos covering it like the front of a card in a card game. He turned and the back of him had the back of the card on it. It was actually very cool.

That said, he opened with the, "I love the Co-Caine, love the Coooocaine," and the crowd went wild! [From their debut album, "Buckcherry."] There was such an energy that filled the room and the couple of thousand people there were all elbow to elbow, literally. He shook up the crowd for sure. That song about cocaine addiction used to be real popular so just about everyone was singing it with them.

Finally, the main band, "Fuel," came on stage and started with their hit at the time, which was " Sunburn.." They were awesome, but a little bit more mellow than Buckcherry. We enjoyed staying and listening for a long time, then we finally got out of there as we were tired and some of the tunes were making the crowd thin down due to the calm that overtook The House Of Blues.

So, if you ever, ever get the chance to see Buckcherry, go join them for a rockin' concert. We have been to that area at Myrtle Beach a few times since and no good bands were scheduled to be there at the time we were. We will always cherish this entire vacation that just my daughter and I went on because we had so much fun.
