Best Mother/Daughter Winter Break Actvities

Lisa Riggs
Winter break is a terrific opportunity for mothers and daughters to take a break from the daily grind and spend quality time together. The bond between mothers and daughters is truly a very special one. Like all relationships, effort must be made to keep that bond strong and close. Here are some fun suggestions on activities that mothers and their cherished daughters can partake in while enjoying winter break.

Pamper Yourselves with A Shopping and Spa Day. After the craziness of the holidays, a day of shopping for clothes and accessories followed by a facial and manicures can really rejuvenate the both of you. My older daughter and I spent a day last year just like this one and she still talks about it. You can be silly together and give the day the atmosphere of two girlfriends spending time together instead of parent and child. Many salons offer a terrific reduction in prices after Christmas and New Year's to keep clients coming in after the holidays. Check out all the price points from your local salons and spas to be sure you are getting the best deal. You just may be able to afford mother/daughter massages too!

Get Some Exercise with a Day of Ice Skating or Skiing. If you have over indulged during the holidays, a day of winter exercise can be a real boost to your energy level and immune system. A road trip to a ski resort can give you both the added bonus of time together in the car to have a meaningful discussion about school, relationships and goals for the future. A more lighthearted approach to the trip would be to take turns picking out the radio station and then singing along to songs you both know. Once at the resort, enjoy the beautiful surroundings and fresh air while whizzing down the mountain. Share a warm and cozy meal by the fire and then head for home. This will surely be a day that both you and your daughter will remember forever. Unfortunately, this day of bonding can easily cost you several hundred dollars after factoring in ski rental, lift tickets and the cost of gas to get up there. A less expensive option would be to head to the local ice rink and spend an afternoon circling the rink. Ice skating is a wonderful form of exercise and a great deal of fun. Once you are both ready to call it quits, share a casual dinner at a nearby diner or cafe. This option will only cost you around a hundred dollars for the entire day, but the time spent together is truly priceless.

Volunteer Together at an Animal Shelter or Food Pantry. My older daughter has a very compassionate heart and has a special weakness for animals. A few weeks ago we spent a couple hours at our local animal shelter sorting donations and walking the dogs. It was a terrific experience for the both us and I feel it brought us even closer. The opportunity to give back to the community while spending time together allows you both to see each other in a different light. Instead of the usual dynamic of parent and child, you see each others hearts and who you really are apart from the family relationship. Do a little research into what charities and non profit organizations are in your area and welcome volunteers. This is truly one mother/daughter outing that you are not likely to forget any time soon.

Take a Class Together at the Local High School or College. If you have a local school that is offering winter classes, peruse the offerings to see if there is one that both you and your daughter would enjoy. Consider a cooking class, modern dance, knitting or painting. You can both learn a new skill or develop a talent or passion. The most wonderful aspect of this mother/daughter activity is that it is on going. Until well into Spring, you can count on this weekly time together to strengthen your bond and have a bit of fun too.
