Synopsis of the movie
The Holiday is a movie starring Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, and Jude Law. This is a story about two women who although they are far from each other, have something in common. They are both recovering from recent breakups. Amanda (Diaz) who lives in Las Angeles, CA has recently just broken up with her cheating boyfriend right before Christmas and decides she'd rather not be home for the holidays.
Iris (Winslet) has been dating a co-worker on and off for years, and he can't seem to let her go or fully be with her either. During the office holiday party he announces that he is engaged to a woman he is officially dating. Iris has no clue until it is announced to the public. She is devastated. Her and Diaz trade houses for the holiday through an online house trading site to get away from men, and realize that you get just what you need when you aren't looking for it.
What the quote is about
The monologue that I admire most is when Kate Winslet is relating with Miles (Black) about being treated badly by someone in a relationship. She begins by saying:
"I understand feeling as small and as insignificant as humanly possible. And how it can actually ache in places you didn't know you had inside you"
This quote is admirable because this is how I felt when I broke up with my first love. To have a feeling described so clearly that was once so hard to explain hits home greatly. Another part of the quote that I found memorable was:
"And it doesn't matter how many new haircuts you get, or gyms you join, or how many glasses of chardonnay you drink with your girlfriends... you still go to bed every night going over every detail and wonder what you did wrong or how you could have misunderstood"
This part is probably the most memorable of the entire thing. When you are hurting this badly your girlfriends are there to help. What hurts the most is that this is a feeling that only time can heal. There are so many remedies that women try to get over a bad break up and it is a temporary fix to get over it all. But at the end of the day you are still left wondering what went wrong. The last part of the quote is more hopeful and makes even the most broken herats feel good about their situation. In it she says:
"And you'll meet people who make you feel worthwhile again. And little pieces of your soul will finally come back. And all that fuzzy stuff, those years of your life that you wasted, that will eventually begin to fade."
By this time in the quote one cannot help but feel hopeful about the future to come. Yea a break up sucks now, but this is only now. In the future there will be not only one, but several people who will cherish you for who you are. That idea alone is enough reason for this to be the best quote ever.

Post a Commentgreat choice, that was a stellar monologue. i love the movie too, i can even somewhat tolerate Cameron Diaz (sorry to all that love her, i just don't care for her) because of the rest of the cast.
I agree with the haircut line. Many women think that if they go chop off their hair and drink themselves into a coma that everything will be okay. Wrong. Most of the time you're left with a bad haircut and DUI. Good to have supportive friends though.
I love love love this movie... love it! And yes, fantastic monologue :)
