Best Movies of the 1990's

Shawn Thomas
The 1990s created several great and memorable movies and performances on the big screen. Some of us may not have seen some of the greatest movies of our time, others may want to revisit these movies and the memories they hold. Here is a listing of my favorite top five movies from the 1990s and some reasons why.

5. Forrest Gump

This movie has a wonderful performance by Tom Hanks and won 6 Oscar awards. This film is a powerful film based around Vietnam and features the great character called Forrest Gump portrayed by Tom Hanks. I really enjoy the Bubba Gump shrimpin part of the movie which has inspired an actual restaurant and chain.

4. The Lion King

The Lion King is an amazing animated film by Disney. The songs in the movie by Phil Collins are timeless. It is my favorite Disney movie of all time. The film follows Simba who is a lion on his quest to continue the circle of life. Two very notable characters from the film are Timon and Pumbaa.

3. American Beauty

American Beauty has a great performance by Kevin Spacey as the character Lester Burnham. The film portrays Lester as he suffers from a mid-life crisis and is attracted to his daughter's friend. The film portrays how American teenagers will brag above and beyond their accomplishments. It also shows how a couple can become disinterested in each other and go after romance from somewhere else.

2. Pulp Fiction

In Pulp Fiction Samuel L. Jackson gives his best performance. The movie also boosts other powerhouse actors such as John Travolta, Bruce Willis and Ving Rhames adds a nice touch. The movie is directed by Quentin Tarantino and is considered by most to be his best work. Samuel L. Jackson has the greatest line in this movie he has ever had as a hitman (Jules) along with another hitman named Vincent portrayed by Travolta and working for crime boss Marcellus Wallace (Rhames). Willis portrays a struggling boxer named Butch Coolidge and his story becomes entangled with that of the crime boss and his hitman. In addition, two small time crooks decide to rob a coffee shop. If you been disappointed with some of Samuel L. Jackson's recent work such as The Spirit and Lakeview Terrace this is your chance to see him at his best.

1. The Shawkshank Redemption

The Shawkshank Redemption is currently rated the #1 movie of all time over at imdb.com. If you have not seen this movie you need to. If you have not seen this movie in several years it is worth another watch. Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne and Morgan Freeman as "Red" are simply brilliant. The movie has an excellent plot and storyline. The music of the movie also is great. The ending scene is extremely inspiring. The movie is about the Shawshank Prison and their journey inside the walls of prison.

Other great movies of the 1990's include Gladiator, Braveheart, The Usual Suspects, and the Matrix.
