Best Movies of All Time - Top 100 Movies Counted Down

Dennis Lindsay
Coming up with a list of the top 100 best movies of all time is sure to stir up a hornet's nest, but the great thing about these sorts of lists is that they create heated debate among those who are passionate about movies. With this list of the top 100 movies ever I have tried to be as objective as possible while attempting to represent all genres and eras. Read on to discover which flicks made my list of the greatest films of all time.

100 - The Terminator - Director James Cameron's sci-fi masterpiece launched Arnold Schwarzenegger to superstardom. With special effects ahead of its time, and tons of classic quotes this movie ranks among the best science fiction films of all time.

99 - Animal House - A classic comedy about trouble-making frat house Delta that causes no end of grief for rival house Omega and Dean Wormer. Stars the late great comic John Belushi as Bluto in one of his best performances.

98 - L.A. Confidential - Kim Basinger gave the performance of her career, earning herself an Oscar, and Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce and Kevin Spacey were just is good in this convoluted tale of police corruption.

97 - Bonnie and Clyde - Screen legends Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway star in this 1967 film about this notorious bank robbing duo. Romance meets crime drama in this multi-Oscar nominated film.

96 - Toy Story - Pixar has earned billions of dollars over the last 13 years, cranking out hit after hit. However, their original masterpiece, starring the voices of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen changed the face of animated movies forever, and ranks among the best animated movies of all time.

95 - The Big Lebowski - Underrated by critics and audiences alike at the time of its theatrical release this film about a case of mistaken identity, bowling and rug theft has gained a huge cult following over the years, and multiple viewings of this Coen brothers' classic will reveal just how brilliant this film really is.

94 - Titanic - It's pretty hard to keep the highest grossing film of all time of a list of the best movies ever made. However, the money alone isn't the only reason for this movie's inclusion. However sick of it we might be by now, back in 1997 this disaster/romance movie had audiences flocking to the theater to see the adventures of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett, and the film took in a rich haul of Oscar statues across multiple categories.

93 - Alien - Sigourney Weaver stars in director Ridley Scott's perfect blend of science fiction and horror. Not as good as the sequel, but still good enough to merit a spot on the list of the top 100 movies ever.

92 - The Princess Bride - A classic fantasy novel that was even better on the big screen. Charming, romantic, exciting, but most of all, hilarious describes this swashbuckling epic of romance and revenge.

91 - In the Heat of the Night - Before it was a hit TV show, this 1968 best picture winner was a big screen masterpiece starring the incomparable Sidney Poitier.

90 - Stand By Me - Based on horror writer Stephen King's novella The Body this coming of age story set in the 1950s details the summer adventure of four friends, who make a gruesome discovery and come face to face with their own mortality.

89 - Back to the Future - One of the best movies of the 80s in any genre, this time travel comedy starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd keeps the laughs and the action coming as the pair risks unraveling the space-time continuum as the result of a wacky experiment involving flux capacitors and a DeLorean.

88 - Finding Nemo - The best Pixar movie (in my opinion) to date, with plenty of comedy from Albert Brooks and Ellen Degeneres in this story about a father who goes on an epic journey to find his missing song. Did I mention this father and son are a pair of clownfish?

87 - Jurassic Park - Steven Spielberg blew the minds of audiences everywhere with this special effects tour de force about dinosaurs that had movie-goers equally terrified and awestruck back in 1993.

86 - As Good as It Gets - Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt swept the Best Actor and Best Actress categories for their incredible performances in this touching 1997 romantic comedy.

85 - Rain Man - An incredible performance by Dustin Hoffman as an autistic man, and one nearly as good by Tom Cruise helped propel this touching drama with just a hint of comedy to Best Picture Oscar glory.

84 - Braveheart - Mel Gibson gives the performance of his career as the indomitable Scotsman William Wallace in this 13th century tale of one man's war against overwhelming odds. Braveheart snagged 5 Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture award.

83 - E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial - Before Titanic swamped it this film about a cute little alien who loves M&M candies was the highest grossing movie in box office history. Steven Spielberg makes another appearance on this list as director of the film, and a young Drew Barrymore co-stars.

82 - Cool Hand Luke - The late legendary Paul Newman was nominated for an Oscar for his lead role in this prison movie about a man who refuses to be broken.

81 - Full Metal Jacket - One of several 80s movies based on the Vietnam War this Stanley Kubrick film was highly praised for its gritty realism and its emotional impact.

80 - The Elephant Man - Nominated for 8 Oscars this 1980 film stars John Hurt in the lead role as a disfigured man who regains himself and his dignity with the help of surgeon Sir Frederick Treves. Based on the true story of John Merrick (really Joseph Merrick).

79 - Die Hard - From wisecracking private investigator on Moonlighting to a Hollywood blockbuster action star in one fell swoop. Die Hard launched Bruce Willis's career and is widely considered one of the best action movies of all time.

78 - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Paul Newman and Robert Redford team up in this classic western movie about the leaders of the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang who are forced to flee to Bolivia when the law comes in force to bring their train-robbing days to an end.

77 - Airplane! - The top 100 best movies of all time aren't all dramas. Comedies, while they don't often get the critical acclaim, delight audiences everywhere and merit consideration. This spoof of airline disaster movies stars comic heavyweights like Lloyd Bridges and Leslie Nielsen and is one of the best comedy movies of all time. Endlessly quotable, silly fun.

76 - The Philadelphia Story - Plenty of star power in this one. Screen legends Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and James Stewart all star in this 1940 love triangle comedy.

75 - Memento - One of the most unique movies on this list, Memento follows the adventures of Guy Pearce's character Leonard who suffers from short-term memory loss and must solve a mystery. However, the audience is left befuddled as well as the entire movie takes place in reverse order.

74 - Se7en - Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, Morgan Freeman and Gwyneth Paltrow are all stellar in this chilling horror movie about a serial killer who punishes his victims for their seven deadly sins.

73 - Ben-Hur - One of the most decorated movies of all time, Ben-Hur won a staggering 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role for star Charleton Heston, and was one of Hollywood's first true epic films.

72 - Frankenstein - Legendary horror movie actor Boris Karloff stars as the Frankenstein Monster in this chilling Mary Shelley tale about a mad scientist who brings to life a creature from the corpses of dead humans. Though it has been remade many times this 1931 classic remains the best of the bunch and is considered one of the best horror movies of all time.

71 - The Departed - Director Martin Scorsese finally nabbed the Best Director Oscar he should have won with 1980's Raging Bull. Leonard DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg all star in this masterful crime drama.

70 - The Green Mile - No other actor in the 90s cranked out as many quality films as Tom Hanks. Hanks gives another memorable performance as prison warden Paul Edgecomb, whose charges are on death row awaiting execution for their crimes.

69 - Heat - Two of the biggest actors of the past 40 years - Al Pacino and Robert De Niro - face off in this Michael Mann directed drama about a Los Angeles police detective on the trail of a thief.

68 - Gladiator - Russell Crowe gives the very best of his many memorable performance in Ridley Scott's epic film of war, politics and betrayal in ancient Rome.

67 - Shrek - Another animated film makes an appearance on this list of the top 100 best movies of all time. Dreamworks knocks Pixar from their lofty perch in this fairytale story about an ogre who must rescue a princess in order to regain his beloved swamp. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all hilarious, lending their voices to this instant classic.

66 - The Sting - Paul Newman and Robert Redford are becoming a regular fixture on this best movies list. Following their success with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid the pair teamed up again for this classic 1973 con movie.

65 - Platoon - The best of the Vietnam War pictures from the 80s, Oliver Stone's masterpiece starring Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe won the 1987 Oscar for Best Picture and landed Stone his 1st of the three Oscars he's won as Best Director.

64 - 2001: A Space Odyssey - Legendary director Stanley Kubrick, despite multiple nominations, won only one a single Oscar as Best Director during his brilliant career and it was for this film. One of Hollywood's best sci-fi efforts the film features the creepy artificial intelligence known as HAL, who has become the most oft-quoted computed in cinematic history.

63 - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Another actor making multiple appearances on this list is arguably the greatest actor of his generation. Jack Nicholson won his first of 3 Oscars for his turn as a criminal who acts crazy to avoid his prison work detail and ends up in an asylum. He has an immediate impact upon his fellows and actually manages some therapy to go along with his rebellion.

62 - Fight Club - Two of Hollywood's best (relatively) young actors teamed up in this 1999 David Fincher. Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden and Ed Norton as The Narrator deliver plenty of twists in this film of split personalities and audiences will be kept guessing until the very end.

61 - The Shining - Yes, Jack Nicholson again, at his lunatic best as Jack Torrance, a writer who gets cabin fever during a winter spent as caretaker of a remote Colorado hotel. Based on the Stephen King novel the movie ranks as one of the best horror movies of all time, and Nicholson's performance is truly chilling.

60 - Blade Runner - Director Ridley Scott and Harrison Ford team up for one of the best sci-fi movies of all time in this dark, gritty thriller set in 2019 Los Angeles.

59 - Scarface - Expect to see plenty of Al Pacino on this list of the top 100 best movies of all time. Pacino creates one of film's biggest criminal icons as Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant who becomes a Miami drug lord.

58 - Spartacus - Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier star in this epic picture about a slave trained as a gladiator who leads a rebellion to gain his freedom. In Spartacus Douglas creates a character every bit as powerful and as memorable as Russell Crowe's Maximus in Gladiator.

57 - Harold and Maude - One of the funniest movies ever made, this black comedy features the unlikeliest of couples with 6 decades of life between them and radically different perspectives on life and death.

56 - Rosemary's Baby - I did my best to represent all genres on this list, so it is no surprise to find one of the best horror movies of all time. Rosemary's Baby is one of those rare horror films that is so creepy it will leave you with a sense of unease for days after watching it.

55 - Taxi Driver - Another Oscar snub for director Martin Scorsese, Taxi Driver is yet another example of this cinematic genius's brilliant work. Robert De Niro turns in another fantastic performance in the lead role as Travis Bickle, a mentally unbalanced cab driver in New York City dealing with the demons of the past and present.

54 - Unforgiven - Though most of the best western movies of all time are of an older vintage this 1992 picture starring Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris and Gene Hackman can hold its own with any of the classic western films of yesteryear.

53 - Strangers on a Train - Master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock directs this classic tale of two men who conspire to commit murder for one another, thus solving the tricky problem of motive. However, as it turns out one of the conspirators is a little more serious than the other, and life becomes deadly serious for both in a big hurry.

52 - The Matrix - Though the sequels that made up the Matrix trilogy failed to do the original justice the first film on its own was so fresh, creative and mindblowing it absolutely deserves a spot on this list. Though the acting by Keanu Reeves and his counterparts isn't exactly top notch, the action, plot and the incredible special effects in this Wachowski brothers film more than makes up for it.

51 - Jaws - Writer Peter Benchley and director Steven Spielberg teamed up to scare the life out of movie audiences back in 1975 with this tale of a great white shark who terrorizes a small beach community, slaughtering anyone foolish enough to go in the water. Roy Scheider, as Police Chief Brody has the daunting task of taking the murderous fish down. Word to the wise: Don't watch this film if you are planning a beach vacation.

50 - The Apartment - Though the name of the film might not sound too exciting don't be fooled this 1960 comedy featuring the legendary Jack Lemmon as a man who comes up with an unusual plan to climb the corporate ladder will keep you entertained from start to finish. The film academy thought so as well, awarding it with the 1961 Oscar for Best Picture.

49 - Das Boot - Not all of the best war movies center around the Viet Nam War. 1981's Das Boot audiences are taken under the sea into the claustrophobic world of a German U-Boat crew who must operate under unimaginable conditions to do their part for their country in World War II.

48 - Amadeus - The winner of 8 Academy awards including Best Picture Amadeus tells the story of the legendary composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart through the eyes of a jealous musical rival now confined to an insane asylum.

47 - Annie Hall - Arguably Woody Allen's best work this quirky romantic comedy is semi-autobiographical in nature, detailing the meeting and subsequent romance between himself and Diane Keaton (who also costars in the film). Annie Hall is widely considered one of the best romantic comedy movies of all time and earned Allen his only Oscar for Best Director.

46 - The Deer Hunter - Robert De Niro stars in this picture about 3 friends who go to war in Viet Nam and whose horrific experiences there forever change their lives. Won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, as well as a coveted statue for the inimitable Christopher Walken for his work in a supporting role.

45 - The Sixth Sense - One of the best twists in movie history earns this 1999 M. Night Shyamalan movie a spot on the list of the top 100 movies ever made. Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment star in this creepy thriller that keeps you guessing right until the end credits.

44 - Singin' in the Rain - Screen legend Gene Kelly tap dances his way into the hearts of audiences in this all time classic musical that is the gold standard of the genre and one of the most beloved films of its era.

43 - The Usual Suspects - One of those movies that you can watch again and again without tiring of it, The Usual Suspects is one of the best crime movies ever made and asks the fateful question: Who is Keyser Soze?

42 - The Big Sleep - Based on the novel by Raymond Chandler The Big Sleep features one of Hollywood's all time great couples - Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Bogart is at his best as Philip Marlowe, Chandler's iconic private investigator who is up against it as he attempts to solve a series of murders while falling in love with his client's daughter.

41 - City Lights - The first silent film on my list of the top 100 best movies of all time, this romantic comedy stars one of the biggest movie icons of all. Charlie Chaplin writes, directs and stars in this charming picture about a tramp who uses every trick at his disposal to raise money for an operation to help restore the sight of a blind girl he has met on the sidewalk.

40 - Gandhi - Ben Kingsley gives the performance of a lifetime as Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian rebel leader whose non-violent protests against the British in order to try and secure India's independence. The film won 8 Oscars in 1983, including Best Picture that year.

39 - The Graduate - The 1967 film that really launched Dustin Hoffman's career as a film actor is one of the best romantic comedies of all time. Hoffman finds himself in a bizarre love triangle and Anne Bancroft is fantastic in the role of film icon Mrs. Robinson.

38 - Dog Day Afternoon - This list seems to be a personal competition between Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. It is Pacino's turn this time around, earning an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a gay man who tries to get money for his lover's sex change operation by robbing a bank. Amazingly the film is actually based on a true story.

37 - The Wild Bunch - Another classic western this 1969 film follows the adventures of a group of outlaws who wind up in a bloody battle for their lives after making a deal with a bloodthirsty Mexican general to rob a U.S. train.

36 - The Exorcist - Arguably the best horror movie of all time, The Exorcist is one of those films that is so powerful it has the ability to physically sicken viewers. People left movie theaters in droves back in 1973, unable to watch the disturbing subject matter playing out on screen.

35 - Monty Python and the Holy Grail - The legendary British comedy troupe delivers non-stop laughs in their take on the Arthurian legend. Graham Chapman stars as Arthur and he and his knights must deal with rude Frenchmen, an unkillable Black knight and a ferocious rabbit in their quest to procure the legendary chalice.

34 - A Clockwork Orange - Not only one of the best movies of all time, but also one of the strangest as well. Stanley Kubrick directed and also wrote the screenplay for this film adapted from the Anthony Burgess novel of the same name. Brilliantly dark, violent and twisted the film is arguably Kubrick's best work.

33 - Forrest Gump - Tom Hanks shows his incredible versatility as both a dramatic and comedic actor in this 1994 Best Picture about one man's incredible journey through life and all that he experiences and accomplishes despite the fact his IQ is only slightly higher than the box of chocolates he enjoys talking about so much.

32 - It's a Wonderful Life - If this was a list of the best Christmas movies of all time this tremendous 1946 film would certainly be at #1. James Stewart delivered many memorable performances during his long, distinguished career but perhaps none as good as his turn as George Bailey in this fantastical holiday film.

31 - Goodfellas - Though this one might not be a huge hit with the ladies, I don't know a single guy who doesn't absolutely love this film. Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro team up yet again, and Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci give some of the best performances of their career in what is arguably the best gangster film outside of the Godfather movies.

30 - Rear Window - Three legends team up in this thriller. Alfred Hitchcock directs both James Stewart and Grace Kelly in this 1954 classic about a wheelchair-bound man who thinks he has witnessed a murder while spying on his neighbors.

29 - The Silence of the Lambs - Anthony Hopkins brings to life one of the most frightening characters in the history of film with his chilling portrayal as the murderous cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Jodie Foster plays the FBI agent Clarice Starling who must match wits with the diabolical killer in order to track down another serial murderer before he can claim his next victim.

28 - Terminator 2: Judgment Day - Though some might prefer the original, there is little question in my mind that James Cameron's 1991 sequel was superior in every way. A special effects tour de force with much better acting than the original Terminator 2 will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish and can easily hold up to today's standards for action movies nearly 20 years after its release.

27 - Midnight Cowboy - Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman star in this 1969 classic about a Texan who finds life on the mean streets of New York City to be far more difficult and dangerous than he'd imagine. Won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.

26 - To Kill a Mockingbird - Writer Horton Foote and director Robert Mulligan bring Harper Lee's groundbreaking novel to the big screen. Gregory Peck stars in the lead role as Atticus Finch, earning an Oscar for his fine work portraying a lawyer who defends a black man falsely accused of rape.

25 - The Grapes of Wrath - Another movie based on a classic American novel. John Steinbeck's book about a family of farmers who endure terrible hardships just to survive during the Great Depression is brought to the big screen by director John Ford and screen icon Henry Fonda stars in the lead role as Tom Joad.

24 - North by Northwest - Alfred Hitchcock is back again, this time directing Cary Grant who gets mixed up in a dangerous misadventure due to a case of mistaken identity.

23 - The Dark Knight - For some reason many people seem opposed to putting "new" movies on a best movies of all time list, perhaps believing the need to age in order to settle into their place in history. However, in my opinion, 2008's The Dark Knight is so good it should have that unofficial wait waived. Dark, gritty and as believable as a superhero movie can get the film features top notch acting by multiple Oscar winners, interesting characters, tremendous action, and fantastic special effects. New or not, it is one of the best movies ever, plain and simple.

22 - The Maltese Falcon - This 1941 classic has had nearly 70 years to settle into its place in history. Based on the detective novel by Dashiell Hammett, The Maltese Falcon brings to life the iconic character Sam Spade, played to perfection by the incomparable Humphrey Bogart.

21 - Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - Though he is best known for his iconic character Inspector Jacques Clousseau from the Pink Panther movies, Peter Sellers best work arguably comes in this 1964 Stanley Kubrick comedy. Sellers works triple time portraying a British captain, the President of the United States, and a brilliant former Nazi scientist now consulting for the Americans, all trying to stop a rogue General from starting a nuclear war.

20 - Chinatown - Nominated for 11 Oscars, this Roman Polanski directed murder mystery marks our entry into the top 20 movies of all time. Jack Nicholson makes yet another appearance, starring in the lead role as private investigator J.J. Gittes.

19 - Aliens - Though many prefer the original, I think the sequel exceeded it in all ways. Sigourney Weaver returns to do battle with hordes of the stomach bursting aliens. More violence, more suspense, more terror make for a better movie in my opinion.

18 - Lawrence of Arabia - This epic desert film based on the life of T.E. Lawrence and starring Peter O'Toole won an impressive 7 Oscars, including for Best Picture back in 1963.

17 - Some Like It Hot - One of the best comedy movies of all time, Some Like It Hot stars blond bombshell and celebrity icon Marilyn Monroe. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon provide the laughs, dressing in drag to join an all girls band to evade the mob.

16 - Raging Bull - Forget Rocky, this is the greatest boxing movie of all time. Martin Scorsese is robbed again as best director and Robert De Niro turns in another incredible performance as boxer Jake La Motta.

15 - A Streetcar Named Desire - Screen legends Marlon Brandon and Vivien Leigh co-star in this 1951 classic set it New Orleans. The film features richly detailed, conflicted characters with real depth sorely lacking in the cardboard cutout characters Hollywood normally delivers. Based on the play by Tennessee Williams.

14 - The Wizard of Oz - We are getting into some true classics on the list of the best movies of all time. Judy Garland stars as Dorothy in this tale of a girl and her dog who get caught in a tornado and are transported to the magical land of Oz. One of the best loved classics ever made The Wizard of Oz was nominated for Best Picture that year, and only lost due to the incredible competition it faced that year, including the epic eventual winner Gone with the Wind.

13 - Psycho - Despite his numerous classic films few would argue that Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece is the 1960 horror film Psycho. This chilling tale would rank high on a list of the best horror movies of all time, and the decision to cast Anthony Perkins in the role of disturbed motel owner Norman Bates might be the best casting decision in Hollywood history.

12 - Raiders of the Lost Ark - Written by George Lucas, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford this film had an absolute ton of star power associated with it. Ford is perfect as Indiana Jones, an adventurous archaeologist who is determined to find the legendary Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can get their hands on it.

11 - The Shawshank Redemption - Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins both give the performances of their distinguished careers in this unique prison movie about the friendship and the spiritual growth of two men. Based on a short story by Stephen King.

10 - On the Waterfront - It seems appropriate that Marlon Brandon stars in the film that marks the entry to the top 10 movies of all time. Brando stars as Terry Malloy, an ex-boxer working the docks who draws upon his experience in the ring to stand up to the corruption in his union. One of the most decorated films of all time, the movie captured 8 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Brando.

9 - Star Wars - This space opera set the film industry on its ear back in 1977. Written and directed by George Lucas the film is arguably the best loved film in movie history, developing a cult following of rabid fans unparalleled by any other movie franchise.

8 - Godfather: Part II - Al Pacino takes the reins as Don Corleone in this Francis Ford Copella masterpiece, based on the novel by Mario Puzo. The movie, which some claim was superior to the original Godfather film was awarded the Oscar for Best Picture in 1975 and earned a young Robert De Niro his first Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

7 - Casablanca - Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman star in this complex tale of love and war set in Africa during World War II. Won the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director.

6 - Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring - The opening 3rd of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved classic novel Lord of the Rings comes to vivid life on the big screen, thanks to the incredible vision and work ethic of director Peter Jackson. Though Return of the King took home the Best Picture award in my opinion it was the groundbreaking first installment that was the best of the movie trilogy.

5 - Schindler's List - Arguably the greatest work of Steven Spielberg's illustrious career Schindler's List tells the true story of Oskar Schindler, a man who went greedy business tycoon to a penniless hero who saved more than a thousand Jews from death at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director and Liam Neeson earned an Oscar nomination for his masterful portrayal of Schindler.

4 - Citizen Kane - Considered by many to be the greatest movie ever made, this incredible film written by, directed by and starring the legendary Orson Welles was a technical leap in filmmaking for its day, and though action junkies might complain at its slow pace it remains a classic that every movie fan should have in their collection.

3 - The Empire Strikes Back - It's not often that you see a movie where the good guys take it on the chin. However, George Lucas bucked the normal Hollywood happy ending trend with The Empire Strikes Back. Luke loses a hand, Han Solo gets frozen, and Yoda dies as the rebellion faces its darkest hour. Yes, the original was great, but I think the sequel managed to outstrip it (barely).

2 - Gone with the Wind - Forget about Titanic or Star Wars, if you adjusted for inflation this great American classic's box office take would blow the competition out of the water. Starring Hollywood icons Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh as Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara it is widely considered Hollywood's greatest love story. Beat out The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Of Mice and Men among others to win best picture that year.

1 - The Godfather - Two of the greatest actors of their respective generations - Marlon Brando and Al Pacino - team up in Francis Ford Coppola's incredible adaptation of Mario Puzo's best-selling novel. With 11 Oscar nominations and 3 wins, including Best Picture and Best Actor The Godfather is one of The Academy's most decorated films. Though I'm sure many may disagree I believe this film stands alone atop the list of the top 100 best movies of all time.
