Best Movies and Films to Watch for Chinese New Year

One of the best ways to learn about a culture and people is to read books and watch movies based in that country. Chinese New Year begins early in February. Here are best movies and films based in China to explore Chinese New Year.

"Mulan: Based on the story of Hua or Fa Mulan, a young Chinese girl who impersonates her father and leads her people in battle against the Mongols. The Disney movie is based on the Ballad of Mulan. Here are activities based on the Ballad of Mulan. Here is a transcript of the Ballad of Mulan in Chinese.

"Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" (2000, Michelle Yeoh, Ziyi, Zhang, Chow Yun-Fat) A masterful special effects film from Ang Lee.

"Hollywood Chinese" (2008) Another Ang Lee film showing how Chinese people have been shown in Hollywood over the years. Shows how stereotypes and racial prejudices played out for Asian-Americans.

"Yeh Shen: A Chinese Cinderella Story" CBS Story Break with Bob Keshan (Captain Kangaroo). This story is based on the book Yeh Shen: A Chinese Cinderella Story by Ai-Ling Louie. I've linked you to the cartoon on Youtube.

"The Last Emperor"(1987, John Lone, Joan Chen) This elegant film takes viewers inside The Forbidden City to explore Imperial China and it's fall to communism. The story chronicles the life of Puyi, the last emperor of China. This film won 9 Academy Awards.

"Seven Years in Tibet"(1997 Brad Pitt, Ric Young, B.D Wong) Chronicles the early years of the young Dalai Lama of Tibet and Tibet's tumultuous interaction with Communist China, as seen through the eyes of Austrian mountain climber Heinrich Harrer.

"Kung-Fu Panda"(2008, 2011) Animated story of Po the Panda and his quest to be the Dragon Warrior. Takes place in Imperial China. Light-hearted and fun.

"The Good Earth" (1937) Book to movie story of a peasant family in China from Nobel Prize winner Pearl S. Buck.

"The Amazing Panda Adventure" (1995) Not a great movie, but the scenery in Chengdu is lovely.
