Best Movies for a Girls' Night

Aimee Cirucci
Planning a girls' night? Due to the economy more and more people are favoring at-home gatherings as opposed to expensive dinners, $10 a drink nightclubs and lavish spa treatments. And home can be the perfect place for a girls' night combining a laid back atmosphere with an experience personalized for your group of pals. But no girls' night is complete without entertainment. Consider renting one (or all) of these five movies to take your girls' night from good to great.

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

A classic and favorite of women for more than forty years, Breakfast at Tiffany's based on a novella by Truman Capote, made it hard not to fall in love with Audrey Hepburn's flaky but endearing Holly Golightly. Add a fascination with Tiffany diamonds to Holly's striking good looks, singular style and romantic escapades and you've got the quintessential girls' night movie.

My Big Fat Greek wedding (2002)

It is no secret that women like weddings so at least one marriage-minded movie had to be included in this list. The movie I ultimately chose, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, combines humor, unforgettable characters and the always appealing story of a normal girl who reinvents herself and claims her own happily-ever-after.

Pretty Woman (1990)

This updated Cinderella story solidified itself as a classic chick flick from the moment it opened in 1990 with an updated version the naïve Holly Golightly character created by Audrey Hepburn. Julia Roberts charmed audiences (and Richard Gere) in this fun movie with a happy ending that gives us faith that love will prevail.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

It is impossible to leave Meg Ryan off a list of girls' night movies and When Harry Met Sally is worth watching for her famous deli scene alone. But the real draw about Harry and Sally is that it is one of the only movies to accurately portray the richness and depth of friendship between men and women and the subsequent stresses that go with it.

Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)

Based on the bestselling novel, Bridget Jones's Diary hilariously exposes the insecurities of modern women and the insane things women will do for love. Renee Zellweger is endearing, klutzy, and thoroughly relatable and Hugh Grant is charming and believable in this story about the love that may be hiding right under your nose.

Movies allow us to laugh, cry, bond, and to ultimately better understand ourselves and others, this focus on relationships is what makes them perfect entertainment for a lively girls' night. So heat up your DVD player, invite your favorite friends over and get ready to enjoy some memorable time together with movie gal pals like Bridget Jones and Holly Golightly.
