Best NFL Picks Free-Does the Field Make a Difference?

Article #3

Michael Grisso
Until the "Greatest Show on Turf" St. Louis Rams won the Super Bowl back in 2000, not one team that played home games in a dome had ever accomplished the feat. If you're wondering who those teams include, it's the St. Louis Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, and Detriot Lions (Indianapolis won in 2006, but has since moved to Lucas Oil Stadium).

Why? Who knows, but it's no coincidence that when St. Louis and Indianapolis both won their Super Bowls they had the home field advantage throughout the playoffs (St. Louis even playing the Super Bowl at the Georgia Dome that year). So what does this have to do with getting the best NFL picks free? You're about to see.

Getting the Best NFL Picks Free Means Understanding the Teams (Dallas Cowboys)

The best way to understand how the field comes into play when getting the best NFL picks free, you need an example. In week #1 of the 2008-2009 season the Dallas Cowboys travel to the Cleveland Browns. Now, even though Cleveland has bolstered their offensive by adding a #2 WR like Donte Stallworth to compliment Braylon Edwards, it doesn't mean they're going to blow up offensively in this game. What exactly does it mean?

Well, it simply means on paper this looks like a hell of a matchup for the first week in the NFL. However, anyone who decides to do a little online football betting with this game needs to take a look at the Dallas Cowboys. A team that has made a living on field turf since 2002 (now tufted nylon 6) travels to the Dawg Pound where grass is involved. Does their offense sputter when they put on the spikes?

According to stats listed from the ATS website you can take the last 10 games the Cowboys have played on grass on the road and they've gone 7-3 straight up. However, let's just go back to 2007 when they had a great team and their record was 4-1 straight up. 2007 against the spread in those same five? 3-2. The two losses against the spread came from the Carolina Panthers and their Division Rival, the Washington Redskins in the last week of the season.

Getting the Best NFL Picks Free Means Understanding the Teams (Cleveland Browns)

The Browns on the other hand were 7-1 last year at home. According to ESPN, Cleveland hasn't hosted the Cowboys since 2001 so the head to head matchup doesn't apply to helping with the best NFL picks free. What the trends don't tell you is 6 of their 7 home wins were against Cincinnati, Baltimore, Miami, Houston, Buffalo, and San Francisco. All 8-8 or below in 2007. There lone win against a competitor was Seattle who had no running game and it took a comeback 33-30 overtime win to win that game.

One of the biggest trends since 2002 for the Browns is that they are 1-5 in their home openers. However, it's hard to take those years seriously considering they were one of the worst teams in football between 2003 and 2006 winning no more then 6 games in one season during that span. So in the end who would you put your money on if the line is Dallas -4?

The Final Play

The truth of the matter is you still don't have enough information yet to get the best NFL picks free, especially on this game. We still haven't covered the secondaries of both teams going against pass happy offenses. Whether or not the defenses will be able to stop the run. There's a lot of planning that goes into online football betting and making your own free picks. The question is do you want to spend the time doing it yourself or use a formula from places like the Best NFL Picks Free?

Great read. I agree with Katy, that betting on teams that play away from their turf can be more risky than those who play at or at least close to home.

I am kinda putting 2 and 2 together in my observation here; reflecting on your previous article w/ weather climate. I mean the Cowboys are not use to the snow (unless of course they played college football up north somewhere or whatever). As far as most of the games, they are use to playing on their hot and muggy turf. I can see how weather can effect the game, because I know it snowz in Cleveland. You may want to ask some of the fanzz from Cleveland what they think about it. I am sure that they have sat in snow stormz just to see the Brownz play. It is something that the playerz have to become accustom to naturalee, I am sure. So betting on the team who plays most of their games on other turf may not be the best of betting moves. Of course I don't bet or anything but I am learning a little reading your articles here Michael.
