What defines a QB as the best ever? Stats, TD passes, QB rating, Super Bowl Rings? In looking at all-time stats, the best measure of true greatness is how a QB does in the clutch, meaning playoffs and Super Bowl games. This leads to looking at history, with these names coming to the forefront: Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman and Tom Brady. Bradshaw and Montana have won 4 Super Bowls, Aikman and Brady 3 each. Obviously, you cannot omit Dan Marino, Brett Favre, John Elway or Manning from your all-time best ever QB debate. Perhaps give a nod to either Steve Young or Johnny Unitas as well. Plus, Manning has years ahead of him and could very well play in and win 2 to 3 more Super Bowls.
However, comparing Manning's numbers to Montana's gives clarity to the argument about who is the best ever. It's Joe Montana, folks.
Postseason for Montana (11 post-seasons): 45 TD's, 21 Ints, QB rating: 95.3, 5,772 passing yards and a record of 16-7. In his four Super Bowls victories, Montana completed 83 of 122 passes for 1,142 yards and 11 touchdowns with no interceptions, earning him a passer rating of 127.8. Montana led his team to victory in each game, and is the only player ever to win three Super Bowl MVP awards. That is plain awesome!
Manning (10 post-seasons): 28 TD's, 19 Ints, QB rating: 87.1, 5,164 passing yards and a record of 9-9. Super Bowl record: 1-1.
The choice here is Montana, easily out gunning Manning in the games where clutch performance is needed. Top 10 QBs ever list...drum roll please:
1) Joe Montana
2) John Elway
3) Tom Brady
4) Dan Marino
5) Brett Favre
6) Peyton Manning
7) John Unitas
8) Steve Young
9) Terry Bradshaw
10) Roger Staubach
Honorable mention:
Bart Starr, Fran Tarkenton, Troy Aikman, Jim Kelly, Dan Fouts.
Enjoy the debate...it will continue for years to come!

Post a Commentmy husband would agree with you. I think it all depends on what you value or respect in a QB to make your case.. I say Brett Favre. I admire his mental toughness and his commmitment to the game, most of all I love how much fun he seems to have every single game.
