With a library of over a hundred Wi-Fi enabled games, the Wii is no slouch in the online play department. With fun, free online play hindered only by the minor nuisance of entering a one-time friend code with other players, one can't help but sink the occasional weekend into it. For gamers looking to get their run & gun fix with the Wii's online service, look no further than below for the best shooter Wi-Fi games.
1. The Conduit
# of Players Online: 2-12
Price Range: $15-$25
Rating: 9 All-Seeing-Eyes out of 10.
The premier, exclusive shooter for the Wii- it was The Conduit that laid the foundation for later Wii titles. The variety of maps and game types made for a great game that's still enjoyable to this day. The controls are very accurate and intuitive- as well as highly customizable. The weapons are very impressive- the Trust weapons especially. Then again, it can't even compare to its sequel...
2. Goldeneye 007
# of Players Online: 2-8
Price Range: $35-$45
Rating: 10 Golden Guns out of 10.
There are those unwilling to admit that Goldeneye 007 is superior to the original on the N64, but the evidence of otherwise is staggering. The addictive multiplayer can devour hours of your time- be it online or offline. The controls are intuitive and fun- as are the variety of match types. The character selection is as expansive as ever and the maps are varied and fun. Gamers should feel privileged that this Wii exclusive was done so right.
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops
# of Players Online: 2-10
Price Range: $30-$40
Rating: 9 Knifed Campers out of 10.
While the HD consoles fight over who got the worse version of Black Ops, most Wii owners have been very pleased with their copies of it. The game improves vastly on the previous CoD effort, Reflex. The game types are mostly very fun- hurt only by the game's realistic gameplay instead of arcade gameplay. The graphics are top-notch and the inclusion of bots is a huge plus. The controls are fantastic- easily better than those on the other consoles. It would be near perfect if it included split-screen- the one unforgivable omission.
4. Battalion Wars 2
# of Players Online: 2
Price Range: $15-$20
Rating: 8 Victory Dances out of 10.
This combination of a 3rd person shooter and an RTS was one of the first online efforts on the Wii. The visuals are very appealing, the controls are fun, and the tactical elements and depth are impressive. The game plays incredibly smoothly and rewards strategic play over 'run & gun'. The game could have really benefited from a straight-up 'versus' mode with Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, and so-on, but it's still one of the finest Wii shooters as well as a great follow-up to the GameCube original.
5. Medal of Honor: Heroes 2
# of Players Online: 2-32
Price Range: $18-$28
Rating: 7 Cooked Grenades out of 10.
Not nearly as well-known as some of the other titles on this list, Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 still manages to claim a spot. With an extremely impressive 32 player count, accurate controls, and devoted online play without friend codes- many Wii owners swear by this game. There might be only six maps and three game types, but it stills stands as a great example of how to make a Wii shooter.
6. Water Warfare
# of Players Online: 2-8
Price Range: $8
Rating: 8 Water Bottles out of 10.
One of the best Wiiware games to be released- Water Warfare is a highly original water-based shooter. The locales are all exactly what you could imagine for super soakers and water bombs- beaches, playgrounds, seaside cities, and geyser-ridden canyons. The maps are randomly designed and vividly colored. The game has a huge variety of game types as well as customizable characters. It also features offline bots, split-screen, a mission mode, and Wii Zapper support. It's a steal at only 800 Wii points!
7. Conduit 2
# of Players Online: 2-12
Price Range: $40-$50
Rating: 10 Superb Sequels out of 10.
To say that Conduit 2 is a blast to play is an understatement. The visuals are highly polished, the multiplayer is fantastic, and the controls easily outperform any dual-analog setup. The new maps are expertly crafted and encourage genuine skill over camping and cheapness. The story still isn't quite AAA material, it is much more entertaining this time around. It's obvious in every match that care and attention that went to this gem. Conduit 2 is a fantastic sophomore outing for the series. One of, if not the, biggest improvements over the original is in the inclusion of split-screen multiplayer! Then again, the ability to patch the game to fend off hacker is also a welcome addition. All those delays must have given the team enough time to craft his great game.
Honorable Mention:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex
Greg Hastings Paintball 2
Call of Duty: World At War
Bond 007: Quantum of Solace
Onslaught
