Best Paint Colors to Brighten a Dark Basement Living Space

Ann Siper
Paint is the perfect way to add light to a dark basment that is finished living space. These paint colors are the best way to add some light to a dark basement that is lacking in windows or simply does not get enough sunlight.

Here is look at 3 of the best colors for adding light to a dark basement that is finished:

Best Basement Paint Colors #1: Golden Groves from Benjamin Moore

This yellow paint color is my number one pick for a basment paint color. No matter what the purpose of your basment room, this yellow will do so much for it. If you need light, a little fresh airy feeling, and warmth, then this is you paint color.

This yellow also looks great with neutral color sofas that are tan, chocolate leather, or other neutral dark colors. The darker furniture will really make the light paint color pop.

Please note, this is a light and fresh yellow, but it is not pastel. Your basement will not feel like a child's bedroom.

Best Basement Paint Colors #2: Spring Rain from Benjamin Moore

So, yellow was probably expected, so I thought I would throw in a nice blue paint color for you. Lately blue has been a super popular paint color in so many other rooms in the home. It is a huge deign trend to paint a bleu room and use brown curtains with it.

This blue has that touch of freshens, which add light to a dark space, but is not pastel at all either. Nothing is worse than a pastel paint color when you are trying to lighten up a dark space

Pastels will look even more dull in a dark space. Really, they almost look gray. In place of the pastels, try this fresh crisp blue with a touch of yellow in it. Pair it with rich warm brown floors, soft natural browns, and other rich deep furniture. You can also add lights that will shine onto the wall to really bring out the whole bright blue look.

Best Basement Paint Colors#3: Lady Bug Red

Finally, a fresh warm red. I love to use a red on the wall, it is so rich. Most red paints will darken a room. The key with Lady Bug Red from Benjamin Moore is that it has that key touch of yellow in it.

The yellow will lighten the look up, add some warmth and really make a dark space pop. While this red has that touch of yellow, it does not have an orange look. Orange would be a great option for a basement, but this red is so much richer.

I've been looking for new paint for both my basement living room and bedroom. I new that yellow would lighten up the space but didnt know what yellow would not be neither boring or shocking, golden groves sounds perfect for the living room area! I love blue and right now my bdrm is a sky blue color but I wanted something more mature and this Spring Rain gives me the blue I love and makes it perfect for my age... I dont want my bdrm too look like if a 16 yrs old sleeps there! Thanks

Wow Thanks! I just finished painting my basement area Ladybug red on your recommendation. Its gorgeous! This is a dark room right off of my carport...our winter entry to the house...it has one cold light fixture and no other natural light. It looks wonderful, especially at night, when it used to look its worst. She's not kidding about it glowing...like a cozy fire. I used semi gloss on concrete block.
