Fredericksburg in Amazingly Dog Friendly

April Bair
Fredericksburg, Virginia loves well behaved four legged friends. Any walk around downtown Fredericksburg with your dog will be met with admiring good will and a careful look around town will reveal many doggie water bowls just out of the way.

A visit to downtown Fredericksburg should include a stop at the retail store Dog Krazy and if you are in town on Thursday evenings during the summer stop at the patio of Tru Luv's Restaurant for Yappy Hour and give your pooch a chance to socialize with neighborhood canines and raise money for the Fredericksburg SPCA.

Fredericksburg has a fenced dog park for Fredericksburg City residents that is self-monitored and open from dawn to dusk. The spacious park is located near Kenmore Avenue and Mary Ball Street and a great place for locals to play with their dogs from dawn to dusk.

Luckily for area visitors this is far from the only park that welcomes canine companions. Stafford County, Spotsylvania County and the surrounding areas are full of local, state and national parks that generally welcome well behaved dogs. In all areas dogs must be leashed and under control. It should go without saying that you must always clean up after your dog and pets are not allowed into restaurants or establishments that sell food or beverages but most of the hiking trails and battlefield parks are dog friendly.

Fredericksburg Battlefield Park at 1013 Lafayette Blvd in Fredericksburg is a wonderful park for a walk. Visit the cemetery, take a stroll down Sunken Road and see was General Lee's troops saw during the great battle. For more information call (540) 373-6122.

Chancellorsville Battlefield at 9001 Plank Road is not too far from the Fredericksburg Battlefield in Spotsylvania County. Chancellorsville Battlefield has about 5 miles of trails for walking and dogs are welcome throughout. More information is available at (540) 786-2880.

George Washington's Ferry Farms and Kenmore Estate are two more fabulous park areas to experience with your dog. Both have extensive outdoor areas that you can enjoy and are located just outside of the City of Fredericksburg. Both of these historic locations welcome your pet to the grounds but dogs may not enter the buildings. Ferry Farms (George Washington's boyhood home) is located at on 268 Kings Hwy (Rt. 3 just east of the William Street Bridge) and Kenmore Estates is located at 1201 Washington Avenue.

Belmont, the home and studio of American artist Gari Melcher, is located just outside of Fredericksburg off Rt. 17 Warrenton Road. The address is 224 Washington Street. This is also the site of the Stafford County Visitor Center. Like Ferry Farms and Kenmore dogs are welcome of the grounds but are not permitted into the buildings.
