Best Part-Time Retail Companies to Work For

David S
We all have our reasons for seeking part-time employment in the retail sector. Some of us just want some extra cash for a vacation or textbooks for school, while for others it is enough money to live off of (assuming costs are kept under control). You may want to try the companies below, as all of them hire part-time:

American Apparel

Now publicly traded, the always-hip American Apparel is a fine retailer to work for. The environment is generally friendly, the stores are brightly lit and often play decent music, and employee discounts on clothing merchandise -- along with other benefits, such as free clothing upon joining -- make this a desired spot to work part-time. If in a large city like New York or L.A., expect to attend a "casting call" of possible associates before being offered a position. Competition can be stiff so present your best self and work hard to win over the interview staff.

Ritz Camera

This specialty camera and photo developing retailer offers good pay, great sales incentives (make a "bonus" on certain items sold), and a friendly environment. If you are a tech savvy photography or camera buff, this could be the perfect part-time position. I also remember them offering a solid commission on every membership card sold -- this can add a substantial amount to your paycheck.

Abercrombie & Fitch

The illustrious A&F "sales model" gig doesn't pay particularly well, and the smell of Abercrombie-branded cologne wafting through the sales floor can be at times worse than anything you would be subjected to at Guantanamo Bay, but there are certain perks. The clientele, and work force, at A&F is notoriously attractive. If you join their ranks, expect mediocre pay but good weekend parties and cute co-workers. Also, the employee discount on clothes makes the polo shirts and other legit clothes there actually affordable.

Apple Store

The Apple store is something to aspire to if you are a tech nerd in search of part-time employment. "Genius Bar" staffers at Apple's retail locations are knowledgeable, friendly, and highly sophisticated in their approach to customer service. If you are looking for a job that involves answering questions about broken iPods all day, this could be it. Also, full-time employees are reportedly given all kinds of perks (many allegedly received a free first-generation iPhone, etc.) Plus, working for Apple has a certain prestige element in certain circles. I don't know which circles these would be, but I'm just saying.

Barnes & Noble

"Book slaves" at Barnes & Noble, as Kate Winslet's character referred to her job in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, enjoy a fairly easy lifestyle, great workplace, decent pay, and a certain cultural prestige. In addition, B&N part-time employees tend to be a social bunch.
