Best Peanut Butter Sandwiches

My Picks for the Best Sandwiches Made with Peanut Butter

Amy Solovay
Everyone knows about the classic sandwich combination of peanut butter and jelly; PB&J is a tried-and-true favorite. Sometimes it's good to mix things up and try a new sandwich combo. Enjoy these suggestions for making the best peanut butter sandwiches.

Food for Life Cinnamon Raisin Bread With Peanut Butter and Honey

Honey is one of my favorite foods. I eat it plain, but it tastes even better as part of a peanut butter sandwich.

There is no wrong way, really, to make a peanut butter and honey sandwich. I do have a favorite combination though: Take cinnamon raisin bread; my favorite is Food For Life's cinnamon raisin bread. Pair it with a locally-produced honey, preferably a honey purchased directly from a local farm. California-grown avocado honey is my usual choice for this; its sweet, rich flavor makes it an ideal addition to a peanut butter sandwich. Add the peanut butter of your choice; homemade peanut butter is great, but Trader Joes' peanut butter is also a good choice for chemical-free peanut butter.

In my opinion, this is hands-down the best peanut butter sandwich. Since I like variety, I still continue experimenting with other peanut butter sandwich recipes, even though I've never yet found one to top that one.

Peanut Butter and Lemon Curd Sandwiches

Lemon curd is delightful. It's both tart and sweet, and its rich texture reminds me of custard. It also has similarities to jelly, which makes it a natural substitute for the jelly in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

I haven't tried every lemon curd available, but so far my favorite lemon curd is the one made by Trader Joe's. I'm still experimenting with which bread and peanut butter combinations go best with it. I've tried quite a few, and so far they've all been delicious. My favorite so far has been Trader Joe's lemon curd paired with whole wheat bread and Justin's organic creamy peanut butter. I really like this filling combination with multi-grain breads as well.

Peanut Butter and Apple Butter Sandwiches

The first time I tried a peanut butter and apple butter sandwich, it was motivated by desperation; there wasn't much else in the pantry at the time. It wasn't a combination I would have been likely to try otherwise. Usually, apple butter was something we paired with cottage cheese.

I was surprised, and delighted, at how delicious my first peanut butter and apple butter sandwich tasted. I originally placed the two spreads in between a couple of plain pieces of store-bought whole wheat bread. If you're taking your sandwich to school or work, and it needs to be easily transportable, store-bought bread will suffice, but nowadays, I prefer using homemade French bread. This doesn't always work out well as a traditional sandwich, per se. You could call it an open-faced sandwich, or you could just think of it as homemade bread with toppings. Either way, it's a yummy treat. To make it, I prepare the bread in the bread maker. I slice the bread thick, and then add layers of peanut butter and apple butter on top.

Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches

Many people enjoy peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I'm not a huge fan of this combination, but since my best friend is, I thought I'd at least mention the idea in case you hadn't thought of it yet.

So there you have it -- my picks for the best peanut butter sandwiches. What do you think? Please feel free to add your own suggestions for peanut butter sandwich recipes in the comments section below.
