Baseballs
To get the best looking signature on a baseball, use a medium blue, clear barreled Bic ball point pen. This type of ink prevents the autograph form bleeding and is the best color to make it more visible. The blue ink also stays true to color over time, while black ink often turns purple.
Basketballs and Footballs
For a good-looking basketball signature, use a large black or silver Sharpie or acrylic paint pen. Purchase one with a rounded point. The chiseled edge markers won't sign smooth on the textured surface, distorting the look and authenticity of the autograph.
Pictures, Magazines and Sports Programs
A fine or medium point Sharpie marker works best on these sports autograph surfaces. The color of the marker depends on whether the picture or program is light or dark where you want it signed. A blue marker is best for light backgrounds. A black marker is often used on light colors, but be wary of using one on photographs. The edges of the ink can turn yellow with age.
A silver Sharpie will pop on darker backgrounds. A blue one will also allow a visible signature on a dark surface.
Sports Jerseys
Black and silver permanent markers with a medium fine point are the best for sports autographs on jerseys. The athlete should be signing their number, on the back. If the number is white, use the black ink. For darker colors, the silver marker will show up best. Avoid using blue, as the ink tends to fade on clothing.
Helmets
Black and silver permanent markers are the best for showing and preserving signatures on an autographed sports helmet. Use the black on light colored helmets and silver on dark ones. Avoid using paint pens on this type of memorabilia. The paint can dry and chip off, ruining the readability and value of the autograph.

Sharpie brand makes a difference on many surfaces. Some other brands don't dry as readily and smear more easily.
