Granite Regional Park
Dog owners will appreciate picnic spots in Granite Regional Park, which is located 8200 Ramona Avenue in Sacramento. A large dog park means your four-legged family members can roam free while you enjoy your meal, then you can work off some calories with the Frisbee or tennis balls you bring with you. Just don't forget a few Milkbones to reward your pet for his good behavior.
Granite Regional Park is one of the most popular picnic spots in Sacramento because there is more to do than simply sit and eat. There are soccer and baseball fields, which are often occupied on the weekends, as well as a large pond and several walking/jogging trails.
Southside Park
Families with children should head out for a picnic in Southside Park in downtown Sacramento, which is located at 2115 6th Street. In addition to scenic picnic spots scattered throughout the park, there are wading and swimming pools, and a large playground area on which kids can work off their energy.
You can find a patch of grass on which to spread out a traditional checkered blanket, or you can take advantage of the picnic tables'"some of which are covered to shelter you from the sun. While you're there, make sure to take a walk through the lush, colorful gardens at the center of the park.
American River
There is plenty of fun to be had on the American river, which boasts numerous amenities for Sacramento residents and visitors. White water rapids are available for those who like some adventure with their picnics, and there are lots of trails for exercise and education. Enjoy your picnic on the sandy banks of the river or further inland, on grassy lawns that flank both sides of the waterway.
Amador Flower Farm
Sacramento is a bustling, thriving city that can sometimes overwhelm even the most active residents. This is why many people choose Amador Flower Farm from among the other wonderful picnic spots in and around Sacramento. It's a rural getaway with lots of flowers and other plants and an atmosphere of openness you can't find in the middle of the city. Parking is free to the public, and you might consider a tram ride after your picnic.
Planning a Picnic
Choosing from among Sacramento's best picnic spots is the first order of business, but once you've chosen a destination you'll want to give some thought to your menu. Some foods just aren't appropriate for picnics.
Where possible, choose finger foods that don't require storage at specific temperatures. Raw vegetables, such as carrot and celery sticks, make great appetizers with a simple ranch-based dip. Small sandwiches, mini quiches, and pita sandwiches make perfect entrees.
If you'll be engaging in physical activity before or after your picnic, make sure to bring hydrating liquids as well as sodas or other beverages you might prefer with your meal. A cooler of ice water or Gatorade does the trick when the afternoon temperatures begin to climb.
