Best Places in Chicago to Get a Sandwich

20 Options for All the Meat and Condiments You Can Stand

Tim Searles
Do you have a craving for a sandwich but not sure where to go? Chicago has a great variety of sandwich shops and delis. We have your retail chains like Subway, Potbelly Sandwich Works, and Quiznos, but sometimes you want that specialized sandwich that only Chicago can offer. Here are some of the places I've either tried or researched that I thought would be the best bet for your sandwich craving:

Fontano's Subs - 2151 West 95th Street

J.P. Graziano's - 901 West Randolph Street

Manny's Coffee Shop & Delicatessen - 1141 South Jefferson Street

Bari Foods - 1120 West Grand Avenue

Perry's Deli - 180 North Franklin Street

L'Appetito Imported Italian Foods - 30 East Huron Street

Zaleski & Horvath Market Café - 1126 East 47th Street

Morry's Deli - 5500 South Cornell Avenue

AP Deli - 2025 East 75th Street

Kasia's Polish Delicatessen - 2101 West Chicago Avenue

S & S Deli - 3290 North Elston Avenue

Hannah's Bretzel - 180 West Washington Street

Deli Boutique - 2318 North Clark Street

Jerry's Sandwiches - 1938 West Division Street

The Brown Sack - 3706 West Armitage Avenue

Mr. Beef on Orleans - 666 North Orleans Street

Fox & Obel - 401 East Illinois Street

Taylor Made Deli - 1010 South Western Avenue

Chicago Bagel Authority - 936 West Armitage Avenue

Dominick's - 1 North Halsted Street

Within this list, my favorites include Jerry's Sandwiches and Fontano's Subs. I like Jerry's for their options. They have custom-made sandwiches but you can also create your own sandwich and put whatever you like on it. You can customize the bread, the condiments, the meats, the accessories, all of it. Not to mention having a decent choice of sides and beverages, for about $10 you can have a good meal there.

My mom got me started on Fontano's Subs. She used to always get sandwiches there from when she used to work near the downtown location and I wouldn't eat them... until I got older. When I got older I tried them and now I love them. I recommend them if you're into Italian subs with fresh Italian meats and cheeses. You won't be disappointed.

A couple of others that I want to bring out of the list... Hannah's Bretzel has organic fare, so if you're into organic eating, I recommend trying their sandwiches. I haven't been yet but they looked clean and appealing. Fox & Obel is a European market so I'm sure you'll get some variety there. Dominick's on Halsted... their paninis are so good. You wouldn't expect that from a grocery store, but they are. I highly recommend trying them. I'm sure they're consistent at most locations, but that's where I normally get mine.

Some of these places I have yet to try, but I'm always in the mood for a good sandwich, so if you have comments about any of the places I've listed let me know what you recommend. Otherwise, don't pile that sandwich too high!

Almost perfect list... but you forgot Susie's on Montrose! I couldn't do a review for them as the ONLY thing I've ever had there is the Philly and OMG is it ever a Philly!
