Best Places to Live in Arizona (2012)

Household Income, Educational Attainment, and Property Crime Rates

J.C. Grant
This article, the fifteenth in a 50-state series, ranks the best places to live in Arizona based on three criteria: (1) median household income (adjusted for cost of living); (2) educational attainment (% of residents 25 years and over who have earned a bachelor's degree or higher); and (3) property crime rates per 1,000 residents (burglary and automobile thefts). For purposes of these rankings, "places" are incorporated municipalities with populations greater than 2,000.

Among the twenty best places to live in Arizona, sixteen are either edge cities, suburbs, or outer exurbs of Phoenix, and four are suburbs or outer exurbs of Tucson. By county, thirteen of the best places to live in Arizona are located in or partially in Maricopa County, three in Pima County, two in or partially in Coconino County, one in Cochise County, three partially in Yavapai County, and one partially in Pinal County.

J.C. you do such a great job on this, but AZ is too hot for me!

Thanks for mentioning Sedona, Karen. When I was deleting CDPs (which I don't include), Sedona was inadvertently removed. It's now number 11, bumping Mesa from the list.

Flagstaff is great if you like snow. No Sedona?....that's a beautiful spot:) Nice work.

I held a sales meeting in Scottsdale once and we had a day to just kick back and tool around the area. It was lovely (hot but pretty!) The only thing that concerned me was the residents spoke of a possible water shortage in the area - I wonder if they have resolved that? cheers :)

Great memories from this, J.C. I lived in Tucson years ago, been to all the places you listed when I was working for the US SCS. Thanks!
