Best Places to Propose in Charleston, South Carolina

Paul Bright
Charleston, South Carolina is known as the "Holy City" because of the various large churches in the downtown area. The city has taken special zoning codes to preserve its look and keep its historic and polite profile. Homes downtown must stay within a certain paint and color scheme; buildings are not allowed to be taller than the tallest church (typically no more than 4 stories). All these features not only keep Charleston from having a busy look, it gives a romantic character to the city.

What a perfect place to make that special commitment to that special person in your life! Here are some special locations and backgrounds where you can propose to your significant other in Charleston, South Carolina.

Charleston Battery Walk. The first thing you should do is take a romantic carriage ride around the town. When your ride is about to end, ask the driver to drop you off towards the south end of Meeting Street. At the end of this road is the Battery walk. The Charleston Battery is a historic site where, during the Civil War, the city of Charleston defended itself by placing cannons along the port and coast.

It may sound like boring history, but the display and walk along this battery is spectacular because of the coastal view and cleanliness. White Point gardens and the Hazel Parker playground highlight the walk with luscious green grass and plenty of floral displays and fountains. Catching a sea breeze at the right time (dusk during the spring) and making your way to the gazebo just screams of proposal. If I would pick a place to propose in the downtown area, this would be the place!

Isle of Palms Beaches. These beaches are among the cleanest and well-kept in the Charleston area. Many of Charleston's rich and famous residents (mostly real estate persons) come to work and play in Isle of Palms. It's never too crowded, the sands aren't full of garbage, and the hotels and peers make for a wonderful background along the Isle. If you want to propose at night, I would recommend a walk from the Windjammer to the peer to build up the moment. And if you do it with a full moon, how could she say no?

The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island. If you aren't careful, you'll be starting a family the same weekend you propose if you do it at the Sanctuary. Located on Kiawah Island (which boasts homes owned by celebrities like Bill Murray), The Sanctuary has often been regarded as one of the most romantic places in South Carolina. The Sanctuary boasts rooms like the Presidential Suite that is over 3,000 square feet in size! Spa packages, fireplaces, and private concierge services make creating a romantic aroma all too easy to do. It's a costly stay but worth every penny if you can make reservations.

With Momma and the Misfits. This may sound crazy, but if you're a musical kind of couple, find out where Momma and the Misfits are playing and propose there. Rhonda "Momma" Wall, her husband Dupree and their son Jojo are a blues family that is extraordinarily talented and have a way of reaching your heart with their down-home blues music. Momma and Dupree have been married for more than 30 years and the romance is still on fire. With them as a living example, they always show couples that love is forever when you meet that special someone.

So far over 2 dozen couples have proposed at their shows and almost all of them are still together. Currently their show can be seen at the Map Room in West Ashley. Just tell Momma what you plan to do before the show starts and she'll give you space. Tell her you want to hear "Not in This World Alone" and dedicated to your special person. How do I know all this? I did it for my wife seven years ago.
