Best Plants to Create a Privacy Garden

Sophia S. Mark
When you are unable to fence a yard in for privacy it is possible to plant a privacy garden tall and dense enough to create an enclosure. The amount of privacy you want and how much garden space you have to work with will be responsible for determining the types and number of plants you can use.

The best plants for a privacy garden will be those that are able to give you coverage all four seasons, fill in fast and wide, look attractive and remain easy to manage. Here are several shrubs, vines, and flowers that I have had lots of luck creating a privacy garden on a corner lot with.

Boxwood
Boxwood is one of the most versatile plants for landscaping and garden design because of the many ways that you can use it. To create a privacy garden, Boxwood is an excellent choice because it creates a natural screen and backdrop for the rest of the plants that you want to add. With a little trimming, it is also possible to create different shapes from your Boxwood plant which really changes the look and feel of your garden, as well as determines the amount of privacy you give your yard.

Trumpet Honeysuckle
If you live in a favorable climate zone for Trumpet Honeysuckle it is a great vine to add to a privacy garden. The vine is a rapid grower, clings well to fences, trellises and arbors while filling the air with a beautiful scent and flowering enough for two gardens. I have used honeysuckle on an open trellis and it grabbed onto not only the trellis, but everything solid that was in its path, covering the garage so that it gave the garden a continuous look.

New Dawn Climbing Roses
There are several varieties of climbing roses, but this is a particular favorite that I have seen do very well across a wide variety of hardiness zones and in a wide array of settings. Because of the weight of the roses, it is best to establish this vine over a sturdy arbor or gate that you add to your yard. Once the rose vine begins to grow it will add a lot of color and texture to our garden, as well as additional privacy.

Huron Sunrise Maiden Grass
Ornamental grass is a great way to add color and interest to your garden all four seasons, and Huron Sunrise is a great privacy garden choice because of its height and foliage. I chose this grass specifically because of its height and compact shape, the tall reeds and plumes stay upright instead of falling over like so many other grasses. When the other flowering plants in your garden are beginning to fade, Huron Sunrise Maiden Grass comes into its own, with bright purple plumes that flare out over tall green spikes.

Native Wildflowers
Native wildflowers are the best type of flowering plants to add to your garden because they are easy to manage, reseed themselves and add lots of height and interest. Purple coneflowers, daisies and asters are plants that I always have luck with and work in many growing zones. Whatever you decide on, try clumping flowers in groups so that you will have less to weed, and it adds to the feeling of a closed off space.
