Plate lunches, are at their best, comfort foods served up in a friendly atmosphere. In Little Rock, Arkansas there are plate lunches available on almost every corner, but there are a few that stand out as the best plate lunches in Little Rock.

Bobby's Country Cookin' on Shackleford Road offers a twist on the classic plate lunch by offering not only standbys like pot roast and chicken fried steak, they also offer a casserole selection that is rotated daily. Prices are under $7 a plate and servings are generous. Don't forget to finish up your meal with a slice of home made pie.

The Frontier Diner just of Interstate 30 is a beacon for interstate travelers as well as local diners. Great plate lunches that include traditional dishes like fried chicken and sides like turnip greens and macaroni and cheese. Cornbread and rolls are included with your meal. Like all good southern diners, sweet tea is the drink of choice. Prices start at under $6 per plate.

The Downtown Diner on Capitol Avenue is usually crowded with downtown business people and lawmakers from the nearby State Capitol, but the plate lunches are buffet style, so don't let the crowds scare you away. Chicken and dumplings an meatloaf are two specialties. Sides include green beans, fried okra, potatoes and gravy, and corn. Hamburgers make a good option in addition to plate lunches. Desserts and milkshakes are also popular. Prices start at around $7 per person.

The Legion Club is not far from the Downtown Diner, but if you don't know it's hidden in the American Legion Building, you may miss it. Specials change daily and are $5.95 for a meat, two sides and a drink. Chicken and dressing, pork chops and fish are common entrees with standard vegetables like green beans and mashed potatoes as sides.

If you want to venture outside the city, a stop at Bob's Grill in Conway is a must. Entrees rotate, but include fried chicken, catfish and meat loaf. The macaroni and cheese is home made and the cornbread is made fresh daily. Service is cafeteria style. The dining room is plain, but is crowded with a diverse group of downtown workers, senior citizens and college students.
