Best Portable Foods to Pack and Bring into Disneyland

Maggie Blake
There are varying reasons to bring a good supply of portable foods into the parks of the Disneyland Resort. It may be that you only have one day to visit the parks, and you really don't want to take the time out of your day to find a restaurant, wait to be served, and eat at a table. Eating at a Disneyland restaurant could potentially take more than an hour out of your day for each meal, and some people would much prefer to just munch while walking as they make their way to Pirates of the Caribbean. Perhaps your reason for wanting foods that are easy to pack in and eat on the go has more to do with your budget; it's no secret that the food purchased inside Disneyland is expensive. Or maybe you are visiting Disneyland with very small children or someone who is diabetic, and you need an abundance of easy-to-carry foods on hand at all times. Whatever your reason for wanting to bring easy and portable foods into Disneyland, the following suggestions should prove helpful.

First things first - If you want to carry in foods that need to stay chilled, purchase an insulated lunch bag or backpack, like those found at Picnic at Ascot. Throw in the least bulky, and most lightweight, freezer packs that you can find, and your foods should stay chilly most of the day.

Eating breakfast in line can get you in the parks earlier - We have 4 children, and have found that if we want to get in line well before park opening, we need to eat breakfast in line. To get everyone off to a good start, avoid junk foods like doughnuts, and opt instead for healthier portable foods. Granola and cereal bars are great for in-line breakfasts. Also include some healthy protein like Danimals yogurt drinks or Yoplait Gogurts. Add a piece of fresh, whole fruit like bananas, oranges, or apples, and you've got a really solid breakfast, all while holding your place in line!

On-the-go foods that can sustain you all day - If your goal is to avoid purchasing any food at all while inside Disneyland, bring along some inexpensive foods that can keep you going all day. Whole wheat bread folded in half with peanut butter inside can chase away The Hungries and requires no refrigeration. Bring along plenty of healthy munchables like carrot sticks, raw broccoli, raisins, dried apricots, granola, bananas, oranges, apples, grapes, crackers, and cereal bars. To cure a sweet tooth, pack some chocolate chip granola bars. If you are packing an insulated bag with frozen packs, bring along lots of protein packed snacks like yogurt and string cheese.

And don't underestimate the power of the strong smell of popcorn wafting through the parks at night! Pop some yourself before your trip, store it in Ziploc snack bags, and pack it into the parks with you.

Just got back last night from 5 days at Disneyland/California Adventure. Brought in tons of snacks each and every day and didn't have a single problem bringing any of it in. Perhaps the people that Colleen (below) saw being turned away were trying to bring in glass containers or some other restricted item.

Unsalted peanuts in a bag can give a needed energy boost between rides without unnecessary salt and sugar!

Thanks Brandy. Haven't ventured to Disney yet. Mostly because of the expense. Thanks for your suggestions.

I check on the DisBoards every single day, and members have asked those who are visiting the parks each day if there has been any change in what kinds of foods that can be brought in (people began asking after the incident where the cooler was left unattended). Everybody reports back that there is NO change. We've been to Disneyland Resort 100+ times and have ALWAYS brought in snacks, water bottles, sometimes even sub sandwiches and chips. We've never ONCE had a problem bringing any of it in. New info spreads like wildfire on the Disboards. I'll go ask again, but I'm very reluctant to believe that if Disneyland has begun sending people with lunch coolers away, it would not have been reported on the boards almost immediately (members report info while inside the parks).

Just a FYI, Disney does check bags and depending on how much food you are trying to bring in, they may not let you pass with it. It seems they have especially been cracking down lately after someone left a portable cooler unattended in Tomorrowland and they evacuated the area. Just two weeks ago when I was there they stopped someone who had a small insulated soft bag and told them they needed to take it back to the car or put it in a locker. Personally, I would not spend a lot of money on a large insulated bag just for the purpose of bringing food into Disneyland and risk not being let in with it - it could wind up being expensive if you buy a $100 bag and still have to buy food because you cannot bring the bag in with you. It's too bad food is still rather expensive at Disneyland - the international parks are actually somewhat more reasonable for better quality food - even Tokyo!
