Gordon F. Moore Park
Gordon F. Moore Park, or Gordon Moore as we locals like to call it, is tops on my list. This is a huge 702-acre park located on the east side of Alton on Illinois Route 140. Its 10 baseball fields are regulation size and are strategically placed within the park to avoid congestion especially when playoffs are going on. There are large parking spaces adjacent to the fields. Some of the baseball fields have bleachers seats and concession stands are nearby. If you have small children that are not playing baseball, there are several play areas, fitted with playground equipment to keep them occupied. The Alton Parks and Recreation Department does an excellent job of maintaining the baseball fields, ensuring they are ready for practices and games. The park is open from daylight to dusk or when scheduled events end.
Godfrey Ball Park Old and New
Godfrey Ball Park Old and New is located at 810 and 811 Stamper Lane, respectively, in Godfrey Illinois. The old section has seven-regulation baseball fields, some with bleacher seats. There is a concession stand and play area. This baseball park is second on my list because although there is ample parking space, it can be limited during the playoffs. The new section has four fields, which were just recently built, with this being the first year they will be used. The new section also has a concession stand and play area. The fields are well maintained by the Godfrey Parks and Recreation Department. The grand opening for the new section is scheduled for May 7. The park is open from daylight to dusk or when scheduled events end.
Rock Spring Park
Rock Spring Park, located at 2116 Collage Avenue in Alton, Illinois, is an 87-acre park with only one baseball field. This park is third on my list because I feel the Alton Parks and Recreation Department does not maintain this field as well as they do those located at the Gordon F. Moore Park. I also feel that for as large as this park is, there could be more than one baseball field. However, this is still a good baseball field for practice games. It is centrally located within the city, making it easy to find and readily accessible to inner city children. There is playground equipment and some bleacher seating. The park is open daylight to dusk or when scheduled events end.
