Best Presents for Graduates and New College Students

Purchase One of These Gifts for the Recent Grad in Your Life

Wendy Rose Gould
Graduating from high school is a pivotal moment in anyone's life. Whether the fresh graduate is continuing with their education or moving out on their own, they're ready to begin a new life on their own. When it comes to buying a present for that grad, the key is to find a happy medium between utilitarian and whimsy (e.g. fun, yet useful). Consider these five options when picking up a gift for your recent grad.

A Tool Box
This gift may sound a bit too pragmatic, but that's where the charm of it kicks in. The truth of the matter is that most up-and-coming college students (or young adults moving out on their own) don't have access to a good set of tools. And, chances are, they'll need them when putting new furniture together or hanging decor in their new living quarters. Stick with the basics: a hammer, measuring tape, screws, nails. Don't be fooled either -- any independent young woman would be thrilled with a charismatic flower-print set.

NetBook
In today's high-tech world, it's absolutely imperative to have access to the internet. This is especially true for students who do a lot of research. Instead of spending lots of cash on a laptop, opt for a netbook, a smaller, less expensive version that works just as well and is a cinch to carry around. Consider options at Best Buy or Dell, which often provide discounts for college students through the college they'll attend.

Picture Frames and Family Photos
This one's a bit mushy, but you really can't go wrong. Have a few of your favorite family or friend photos printed (try Snapfish.com, York.com or Shutterfly.com) and then place them in a picture frame. No matter how much that recent graduate is pumped to move out, it's pretty easy to get homesick when you move away from home.

A Bag of Quarters
Ah, the joys of doing your own laundry. Whether the receiver of this gift is familiar with the ins and outs of a washer/dryer or still needs to learn the ropes, a bag of quarters is the perfect gift. Request a $10 roll from the bank and place it in an easy-to-carry, sturdy bag. The recipient will thank you a thousand times.

Gas Card
A bit of money on a gas card is always a great thing, but a graduate is likely to appreciate this gift even more. Why? Because, chances are, a trip home will be in store. If not for a random trip home, then for the holidays! SVMCards.net has a great selection.
