Over near Pearl Harbor is the Navy Hale Keiki School. Despite the name, it is not a military school or affiliated with the armed forces. However, the majority of the students are from military families. The school has about 225 students in preschool through the second grade. The curriculum focuses on reading and comprehension, problem solving, and speaking. Navy Hale Keiki School also prides itself on being very patriotic, and the school is decorated with patriotic banners and flags. The school is not affiliated with any religion. Tuition costs are approximately $4,000 to $5,200.
ASSETS School is located between the Honolulu International Airport and Hickam Air Force Base. ASSETS is considered a "special" school for gifted children that have difficulties in other private or public schools. ASSETS specializes in teaching children who are gifted and/or dyslexic. There are about 400 students serving kindergarten through twelfth grade. The classes are multiage and learning is very hands on. The school uses Orton-Gilllingham, Slingerland, Project Read, and their own curriculum for teaching dyslexic children. The Kaplan and Renzulli models are used for the gifted students. The goal is for the students to have the self confidence and skills to be able to move back into a mainstream setting. ASSETS is an independent school without any religious affiliations. Tuition costs are about $19,200.
Also near Honolulu International Airport is Holy Family Catholic Academy, a Roman Catholic School. The school has more than 600 students in preschool through grade eight. Holy Family Catholic Academy is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The school emphasizes good Christian values and encourages students to be high achievers. The curriculum includes studies in reading, language arts, writing, social studies, and science. In addition, students also take courses in religion, music, art, Spanish, and physical education. Many of the students are from military families. Tuition costs are about $6,000.
There are some excellent private schools in the Salt Lake area of Oahu. Hopefully the above article will help families make a decision for the right one for their children.
